Any opinions on the Headphone amplifier of the Lynx Hilo?  Any other users of the Hilo on this forum?

The Lynx Hilo scored top of the list on Pro-Audio forum gearslutz when compared to other high end Pro-Audio A/D D/A converters.

http://www.gearslutz.com/board/8268185-post154.html

I've been using the Hilo for several weeks now with great results.  The built in headphone amplifier sounds amazing with multiple headphones.  More details soon.  I partially referred to the Hilo in this thread.

http://www.head-fi.org/t/437390/spl-phonitor-roll-call-appreciation-thread/450#post_8713933

I will give a more complete review.  As mentioned in the thread above, I will compare the Hilo headphone amplifier with the SPL Phonitor headphone amplifier.

Take care,
Rich

Brings life and emotion to Sennheiser HD 800

My first impressions based on a  demo in a demo room lasting approx. 5 hours:

Source, DAC and headphone amplifier:
  1. Windows 7 + foobar2000 -> USB -> Lynx Hilo
  2. Lynx Hilo -> digital -> Grace Design m903
  3. Lynx Hilo -> digital -> Benchmark DAC1 HDR

Each was used as both DAC and headphone amplifier. "digital means either RCA S/PDIF or Toslink". I think Grace Design was fed with Toslink.

Headphones:
  1. Sennheiser HD 800 with all three
  2. Sennheiser HD 650 only with Grace Design m903, and for the first 1-1.5 hours

Lynx Hilo, Benchmark DAC1 HDR, Sennheiser HD 800, and Sennheiser HD 650 belonged to the demo company. State of run in unknown to me. Grace Design m903 belongs to me and has been run in and in use for 1 3/4 years.

Lynx Hilo: April 2012 firm ware and Windows driver v. 1.55

Music: Varied and well known to me.

Important notice: I listen at (very) moderate loudness levels, many would (probably) call them (very) low.

Sennheiser HD 650 was very nice with Grace Design m903. My thought about the HD 650 during/after the session was "So that's what all the fuzz is about". For comparison: The day before I tried Audeze LCD2.2 bamboo with the same PC and USB to Grace Design m903. My thought during/after the session was "What's all the fuzz about?" and "Much Ado About Nothing".

Denon AH-D7000 is very good with Grace Design m903 by the way, and it's also been very good as a DAC for STAX SR-009 + STAX SRM-007t.

Unfortunately I haven't been as a happy with Sennheiser HD 800 which I've experienced hasn't involved nor moved me. It has more or less left me as a (distant) observer instead of taking hold of and moving me. It has what we in Norwegian refer to as low or lacking goose bumps factor (Norwegian: gåsehudfaktor). Ditto for toe tapping, head bopping and body movement factor. I've hence earlier asked on the Norwegian forum Hifisentralen whether the HD 800 might be emotionally handicapped. Not everyone was happy with me even asking the question, even though I actually also at the same time asked whether anyone had suggestions for headphone amplifiers that might remedy this problem. Unfortunately I didn't get any good suggestions.

I got curious about the Lynx Hilo for different reasons. Sennheiser HD 800 was used for the demo because it was a headphone I own that was available at the demo company. I had also hoped for a beyerdynamic T 1, but it wasn't available, and I couldn't travel across the country carrying a lot of stuff.

The Lynx Hilo did good things for Sennheiser HD 800 (and me). Suddenly HD 800 could rock, roll, boogie, move me and more. It even had soul. There was toe tapping, head and body movement. Whenever I connected it to Grace Design m903 or Benchmark DAC1 HDR, the wish to move etc. subsided or vanished. I am so far not sure what factors are the source of this, but it was repeatable. The combination did well with any music I tried, new and old, good and "rusty" recordings, even severe loudness war victims like Duffy's "Rockferry" and The Seatsniffers' "Assembly Line".

I found this very attractive and enjoyable. At last, something that can give life and emotion to Sennheiser HD 800.

I"m using the Hilo and the T-1 to very good results. Very detailed without sounding clinical. The Hilo's hp amp holds up well against other ss amps I've listened to in SE mode. Plenty of bass impact without being overbearing. I like my SP hp amp better but it's a tube amp that cost more than the Hilo. But for convenience, you lose no performance using Hilo's hp amp. Plenty of power for dynamic headphones.

I am currently using the HE-4 on the headphone amp. They take everything the headphone out has to give it but play at a moderately loud level with no distortion. I've heard better amps for the 6, 5, 4. The 500, 400 & 300 will all play well off of it.

The following may be of interest. It's from a Norwegian forum (Hifisentralen), but some of the text is in English:
  1. "Lynx Hilo: Hodetelefonbruk" (Google Translate: "Lynx Hilo: Headphone Use")
  2. "Hodetelefonforsterkerspesifikasjoner" (Google Translate: "Headphone Amplifier Specifications")

In the same thread you will find "Lynx Hilo og HiFiMAN HE-6" and "Lynx Hilo og Audeze LCD2.2, samt hodetelefon + hodetelefonforsterkerberegninger" with Lynx Hilo headphone amplifier SPL calculations for these headphones.

Further out you will find a headphone specification look up table for all headphone impedances 16-700 Ω starting with "Hodetelefonforsterkerspesifikasjoner: Oppslagstabell: 16-200 Ω".

Prior to that you will find more information about the wireless remote control in "Fjernkontroll: Under utvikling, men Lynx ønsker forslag og innspill". Lynx Studio Technology cofounder and chief software engineer David A. Hoatson asks for input as to what functionality we would like to see in any remote control capability.

Some of the text is in English, the numbers probably will be understandable anyway.For the rest use Google Translate or similar if you don't read/understand written Norwegian, Danish, nor Swedish.

You are a technical fountain of knowledge. But in the case of the HE-6, numbers are misleading compared to performance. I'll not make judgment until my 6s are back. What the HE 4 shows though is that you can drive the headphone amp to max without distortion by trimming the input volume a touch. I had a very enjoyable evening with the HE-4s with enough extra power to handle the exciting parts without influence.

Worked fine in windows7 after driver installation, going to try it on mountain lion tonight, however it doesn't play well with ubuntu linux 12.10, not by default anyway... On the off chance anyone has some pointers I'll put some extra info in spoilers below:
Code:
$ uname -a

$ dpkg -l | grep 'alsa-'
ii alsa-base 1.0.25+dfsg-0ubuntu3 all ALSA driver configuration files
ii alsa-utils 1.0.25-3ubuntu2.1 amd64 Utilities for configuring and using ALSA

Other than that the headphone amp seems good, haven't spent more than a couple of hours of just casual listening to it yet...
Hoping to be able to do some critical listening and comparing it to a Benchmark DAC2 HGC and a MyTek Stereo192 sometime during the coming week.

Worked fine in windows7 after driver installation, going to try it on mountain lion tonight, however it doesn't play well with ubuntu linux 12.10, not by default anyway... On the off chance anyone has some pointers I'll put some extra info in spoilers below: [...]

You can write an e-mail to Lynx Studio Technology. They answer quickly and thoroughly when they're not on trips like trade shows.

I have only tried Windows 7 so far.

Did you use your Sennheiser HD 800 for this?

Yeah I basically reposted the info I gave here at their support forum
They didn't list a contact address except for sales.
I guess I could file a support ticket but I figure I'll let the support forum thread be up a while first before I attempt the process of registering for the ticket system...

Nice, I also just tested it on a MBP retina with mountain lion briefly, seemed to work just fine at least using default soundsystem and rdio.
Didn't have any flac around right now, but I will tonight :)

Yeah, and the SR-009's via SRM-323S.

The HE-500 are a very nice match for the headphone out of the Hilo. There is little to nothing to lose with my speaker amps. One of the better sounding pairings I've heard from the Hilo hp amp.

I'm half-way tempted to get the HILO just for the fake analog meters option. :)  However, I think I read somewhere on this forum that the HILO is fatiguing to listen to - too Pro-audio analytical and not enough audiophile musical in it's nature?  Currently using the E-MU 0404USB which is already pro-audio sounding and bright, so I don't want to end up with just a more expensive version of the same thing.  Or are there opinions to the contrary?

On a related note: does the HILO have any built-in parametric Equalization capabilities?

I haven't heard E-MU 0404USB, but I do like my Lynx Hilo and Grace Design m903.

As usual I suppose this depends on your taste. Some audiophiles want sugar or even molasses added to the sound. Lynx Hilo and most other pro/studio equipment don't give you that. Their ideal is typically to be neutral/uncoloured etc. That doesn't automatically imply unpleasant or fatiguing, if you don't crave sugar, molasses, powder, perfume, etc. to the sound.

I have a feeling that this also may depend on the listener's preferred loudness level. People who listen at (very) high loudness levels may need some moderation, damping or sanding of the sound to make it bearable. Some times natural sound can be a bit to much, ie. percussion in a bare walled concrete room. Attending in door concerts or theatre I often find applause too intense for my ears (and plug them with my fingers).

As far as I know it doesn't, but I may be wrong.

As you probably know Lynx Hilo is highly programmable, and new features are regularly developed and put out through firmware updates (2 in 2012). Lynx have openly asked its Hilo users for feature ideas. I have equalization on my wish list, but haven't gotten around to write an e-mail to Lynx including that yet.
