These will be used primarily for classic rock, and gaming.

I have already owned a set of A900s, which I loved, but I'd like to try something a little different.

You basically just described the Ultrasone HFI-780s to a T.

Btw, love your username. =P

I was considering the 780s. I was also looking at the following...

AKG K271S
Beyerdynamic DT770-80
Denon AH-D2000
Eguation RP21
Ultrasone 500 series (i don't know much about Ultrasones yet.)

Do any of these stand out as sounding exceptionally good or bad without an amp?

Unless you get a REALLY good deal on the D2000s, you could probably buy the 780s and a small amp for the cost of the Denons. The 780s will likely outclass the Beyers for rock.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realise the D2000s were so expensive, How are the D1000s?

the JVC Victor M1000. The little brother of the ueber-expensive DX1000. So much better than an A900 to my ears, yet only $169 from Audiocubes.

While I was in Virgin Megastore in SF, I was listening to some music at the listening station. They had some DBI headphones that I am now interested in checking out, but I'm not sure how they compare to anything else. They are direct order from DBI only though. I emailed them for Info. Here is the reply I received:

The DBI Pro705 Headphones cost of $179.00
Frequency Response - 20 - 27.000 Hz
Driver Principle - dynamic
Nominal Impedance - 35 ohms

The seemed nice and durable. After all, they are used for a listening station! They isolated a ton too, since I could no longer hear the music in the store while wearing them.
