I currently use:
DT880 250 ohm
Xonar STX

I want to upgrade my setup, my budget is $300. i don't really know what to upgrade, i was thinking of changing my DT880 to HD598 because i find the 598 more comfortable, and the dt880 sounds really in your face to me, not really any soundstage to separate the instruments. I listen to mostly rock, metal, classic rock. I have tried grado's but i found them super uncomfortable, which is a deal breaker for me as i use them for gaming as well and i have to be able to wear them for a while.

Heya,

At your budget, you're not getting any kind of upgrade. You're simply side grading. Nothing wrong with that. If the DT880 is simply not your cup of tea, then try another mid-fi offering. Your STX is going to drive almost all headphones, so I wouldn't bother changing it until you find the headphone that defines your taste in preferences. I find it odd that you don't seem to think the DT880 has very much sound stage or separation, and is in your face. I find it to be quite different from that. But if that's your experience, then that's your experience.

Look to:

Sony MA900
Hifiman HE-300
AudioTechnia AD900X
Sennheiser HD598
Philips Fidelio X1

Very best,

So if you find the HD598 more comfortable and I'm assuming you like the HD598 sound better then the DT880, then get the HD598s and sell off the DT880.
I would assume you would lose then then $100 for the transactions,
lose even less cash if you buy the HD598s used.

Only problem is that I can't find any 598s used on kijiji or cl at all. The 598 new here is also 300 bucks, and I really don't wana blow that much dough on something IIight not like

When you said you found the HD598s comfortable, I assumed you had tried the HD598s?
You could get the HD558, same driver as the HD598, the HD558 is a little more bassy.
