Looking for more good rap
Sep 30, 2007 at 1:21 AM Post #17 of 38
There is alot out there in terms of rap that is alot better then what has been named and what people actually know of.

I not only say this to the thread starter but in gerneral, if anyone here like rap/hip hop that is really good, you should check rappers like Aesop Rock and Atmosphere.

Those 2 guys are insane. Aesop Rock especially. His beats are not normal. It has a more ambient jazzy feel to it but still really hip hop. Also the lyrics are insane by these guys. Aesop Rock is extremely smart and shows it with his calculated rhymes and flows.

Though I love biggie, the roots and nas. I think artist in the underground hip hop scene surpass their skill and take hip hop to a respectable level even to people that dont like hip hop.

I hope you check those guys out! It will be worth it I promise.

Paul's Boutique is one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time, period, and I'm not even gonna qualify that with an "IMO." It just is.

When Nas is on his game he is better than most underground artists, including the artists you named; especially atmosphere (vastly overrated in my opinion but I'll try not to troll). I value rhyme schemes more than lyrics most of the times so I may be a little biased. Regardless, NaS is still a lyrical genius.

Anyways, here are some more recommendations that have yet to be named. I'm in a good mood so I'll make it easier for you and add a clip.

Okay cats, here's some red meat. Don't everyone pile on at once:

Digable Planets
Reachin' (A New Refutation Of Time And Space)

Smart, fantastic jazz-conscious hip-hop.

Red Hot and Cool has both Pharcyde and Digable Planets, both amazing groups.

A really jazzy hip-hop album that's pretty good is An Evening With The Sound Providers. Also you should check out Murs, Little Brother, Hezekiah's Hurry Up & Wait, Cunninlynguists, and of course old school Common (Resurrection, One Day It'll All Make Sense, and even Like Water For Chocolate). Another album worth looking at is Masters of the Universe by Binary Star.

Talib Kweli is always a good choice if you want good hip hop. He doesn't rap about violence, and he doesn't degrade women. He's a stand-up guy. Plus, his new album rocks. Also look into Blackalicious, and Aceyalone (who just released an album produced by RJD2, which is equally awesome)

Aesop Rock's new one is awesome. way more old school sounding jams on this one. sure it's been mentioned a ton of time on this board but anything on Stones throw is worth checking out. they have a bit of soul and r+b too. for weird art-rap check out stuff from Anticon records. Lately they've been moving towards more electronic stuff like Bracken, Odd Nosdam and Telephone Jim Jesus.
rhymesayers is great for all around sick MCs like Brother Ali, Soul Position and Grayskul.

for Canadian hip hop check out Grand Analog. it's a bit of soul/r+b.
for darker arty rap check recyclone and so so.
for big beats and dancey stuff check out Ghislain Poirier from Montreal.

I'm not a true hip-hop listener but sometimes you just need someone to throw down some phat beats and sick rhymes!
stuff about bitches and hoes and how sick someone's car is and how many dudes they killed turns me off for the most part but i'll name a few acts i really enjoy: *=my favs

*A Tribe called quest (chill as f#%&)
Oukast
Gang Starr (song - You know my Steez)
*Spearhead (some of the most positive music ever, huge talent)
Aesop Rock (genius, but his voice gets old on me pretty fast)
*Deltron (the album "Deltron 3030" is so gooooood)
Atmosphere
*DJ Shadow (some call it hip-hop, i just call it good)
*De La Soul (really light-hearted and chill)
