I am looking for headphones recommendations. Right now I have
What I like about the AKG 240 Monitor is that it has very good
resolution in the midrange. Analytical hearing, in particular voices
and guitars, is very straightforward with this set (and important to
me, see below).
I like about the Sennheiser HD 250 Linear that is had much better bass
than the 240 Monitor. However, the mids are by far not as good as the
AKG, everything is a little munched together. I also realize that the
HD 250's bass is not exactly precise, but the AKG just doesn't have
the depth and overall volume. Ideally I would like to upgrade to a
set that has both in the bass, volume and precision and I am willing
to pay for it.
I like the mechanical design of the AKG much better. It is still like
new after all these years whereas the Sennheiser's foam is falling
apart and one "cushin" ripped. I also like the cable just on the left
side, not Y-cables like the Sennheiser has. I would prefer an
impedance that is suitable for direct feeding by a notebook (although
I normally use an amp).
I prefer a fully closed, ear-enclosing design, but that is a secondary
consideration. I don't care if they are ugly, but I've been told that
it's not possible to really sound great with fully closed headphones.
Sounds is more important.
The music I am listening to is mostly hard rock, but I don't think I
fit the "heavy metal" recommendation area. The rock I listen to is
Deep Purple and related "artisty" hard rock, it is nowhere close to
what I would call constant-pressure heavy metal. I certainly have
more of an analysing approach to listening and I want to be able to
tell all the fine nuiances presented in the music presented. I don't
want to be blown away by a double bass drum. I want to hear whether
Steve Morse is holding his pick at a 30 or 45 degree angle to the
strings and which brand strings does he use, anyway? I guess that I
would probably fit a recommendation for classical music better than a
typical rock headphone set.
So, in a word, I'd like to have the mids of the AKG, the bass of the
Sennheiser if I have to pick or the precision of the AKG's bass with
the Sennheiser's volume and the design of the AKG.
I am set to spend $200-300 but can modify as required.
Is there a place near Boston where I can compare headphones live and in
color?
