New guy here, so this my first post.

Well, I'm looking for headphones from $100-150. Willing to push the budget a little if needed.

Well for music, I would use them for hard rock(system of a down, avenge sevenfold, etc...), electronic such as drum and bass, trance, house, trap, and other bassy things. For gaming, I guess that is pretty standard; be able to hear everything and having the explosions make a bit of an impact.

Now, I don't think I want a set where it will rumble your head off while disregarding the other ranges. This maybe a jack of all trades, master of none.

Open or noise canceling doesn't really matter. At least for now.

I was looking at sennheiser HD 518, $90 on amazon right now, so really tempting, but not sure if these will meet my needs. I saw some reviews said they were bassy; relative to what, I do not know as I never owned a decent pair of headphones. Other people said otherwise and mention other alternatives.

I don't have an amp as now, just planned on using the onboard aduio on my Alienware notebook until I find something later on. If any has any reasonable price suggestions, I would glady consider them, that is if needed.

Okay, Thanks. I will definitely take a look at those. My only concern with the m50s is the possibility of them being too tight. Unfortunately, I'm a bit sensitive of gear being tight on my head.

The m50's really don't have great imaging or soundstage so they might not be too great for gaming (depending on the type of games you play of course, but I tried them with Battlefield 3 and it was quite painful and everything seemed a bit muddled together). Most open backed headphones would be a bit nicer for more competitive gaming but also generally aren't that bass oriented.

For your budget, you could get a used Senn HD558 ($100-$110).

Sennheiser HD558 are within your budget and are better than the 518, but that doesn't mean you wouldn't be happy with the 518 and save some money. You could also look at sennheiser's HD449 or Shure's SRH440, but personally unless you need closed back I think you'd prefer the sennheiser 5xx series.
 
If you're looking for an aggressive sound you could try the Grado SR80i, but from what I've heard Grados have a 'love it or hate it' kind of sound.
 
Personally I feel there's too much hype behind the M50, they're not bad cans for the money but not as amazing and world changing as many people make out. They're certainly less comfortable than the sennhesier 5xx models.
 
If you can stretch your budget to $160 you could look at beyerdynamic DT770 or 990, but I can't really comment since I haven't spent much time with either. You would probably need an amp unless you got the 80ohm versions, and even they would benefit from one.

I'll definitely take a look at the suggestions. Actually, when I first started looking my first choice was the HD 558s, but wasn't it sure if was the right fit at its $170 price point; Amazon has them on sale for $130 now.
