I'm trying to find some good, full-sized closed headphones for a gift. I'm a bit biased towards Sennheiser and am currently thinking of the HD-201s, 202s, or eh-150s, though perhaps a bit nicer. I think the headphones will be mostly used to listen to soundtracks and alternative rock, so bass isn't important (and too much bass could be bad).

Does anyone have recommendations for headphones I should also consider? Also, if anyone could illuminate the differences between the three headphones I listed that would be helpful. Thanks.

hd202 is blehhh...while they sound slightly better than your average consumer headphones, i would shoot a little higher and get the mdr-v6. at $70 it's a way better bang for your buck and i'm sure your friend will be very happy with them. in terms of sound, design, and comfort, you can't get any better than the v6.

There are no good headphones for $50, merely OK ones. HD 280s are sometimes available for around $80, and those are probably the least expensive good headphones.

See if you can find a refurbished Sony MDR-V6 for around $50. Sony doesn't get much love around here, but the MDR-V6 is an excellent headphone. I owned a pair for years and still think they're good.

Part of the reason they're dismissed is because Sony is too well known to the public. There's no "insider" angle, like knowing what a Sennheiser, Grado or AKG is. Also, Sony doesn't spend much time or money marketing to this audience. So their headphones get overlooked. I also have the MDR-7509HD and the MDR-SA5000, which are great, mostly overlooked, headphones.

Anyhow, give the MDR-V6 some thought and scout your local electronics/guitar stores to see if they carry it. Take your iPod and give it a listen before you buy.
