     As the title suggests, I'm looking for any good competitors to the iPod Classic. So, basically, any DAP with similar specs to the iPod Classic is something worth considering for me. I'd also like better SQ and/or a higher battery life because the iPod could be RockBox'd.

Why? Do so many DAPs out there have less storage space than the Classics? Or are they small but expandable? Expandable storage is okay.

Basically the limit today is generally up to 32 gig.  After that it's down to available mods/sd cards.  So for example you have the clip plus up to 8 gig with 64 gig micro sd card and so on.

I would say that Sansa Clip+ is a good choice. You can buy it from Amazon and you have the slot to sd cards, just as the user before me said.

Hm, that may be a nice choice. I'll look into that. If I ever do buy one, it'll be pretty funny when I find out that I'm actually using an MP3 player made by SanDisk, with expandable storage from a SanDisk MicroSD card.

+1 to that. The Clip is a great sounding little player.

Ah, okay. The expandability to up to 40 gig in a small package is a big selling point, but does it have a comparable battery life to the iPod? I plan to play it with a mix of 128/192/320 kbs mp3s and some flacs

Clip+ only does about 10hrs on a charge, and build quality is not that great, especially when compared to the iPod classic

Rockbox will bring that up to 15 or so hours, but build quality vs the Classic is certainly a fair point.

Fiio X3 is just around the corner, so far from all the information we got it's worth the wait and price and then some.
