Title says it all, I am looking for a closed back pair of cans under $200.

I listen to Acoustic, Folk, Indie, Rock, Alt Rock and Classical. I care about the vocals and do NOT want something that has too strong bass.

A few pairs I am considering;

Phiaton ms400
ATH-A900
Fischer FA-011
Sennheiser HD25-1 II

I love the signature from open headsets like the HD598s but I need something that is portable.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated

Thanks!
Jared

I'm in the same situation. I was looking for a pair under $200, closed, great overall sound and finally decided on the Audio-Technica ATH-M50's (straight cord) I'm upgrading from a $20 pair of Sony MDR-XD100's, so I hope to hear a big difference.

The M50s are not recommended for your tastes (coming from somebody with over 1000 hours on their pair). They're a bit bassy and could easily murder some of your music. If you're looking for something suited to your genres, I'd echo the call for the FA-003/HM5, which are great cans. However, they're much larger than the M50 and HD-25.

CALs (Creative Aurvana Live) closed, only 32-Ohm.
Great price at Amazon and Creative Labs.

The KRK KNS 8400 have been getting lots of positive reviews.

KRK KNS 8400. Clarity on them is something you would expect from headphones costing twice as much. Definitely not bass monsters, and personally I think they sound the best with classical music. Give them a try at Guitar Center.

The KRKs and Fischer Audios are probably the best-suited suggestions here for your tastes. I'd try to audition the KRKs, but unless you know somebody with the FAs then you'll be hard-pressed to find a pair to audition.

Forget the MS400's. The FA-003 sounds like it would be perfect for your tastes, but it's pretty big and I think it was designed more for private home listening. That's not to say you couldn't take it around with you; it just wouldn't be convenient. I'm going to say SRH840.
