Go listen to Opeth, Benighted or Psycroptic with the AD700 and maybe you'll understand. Airyness adds a lot to death growls, more so than any other types of vocals. It adds greatly too to some of the old school black metal like Immortal and Burzum.

the grado 325i's spec wise look kick ass but you have to do some mods to get them to perform like a pro. also, i think an amp is required. i dont wanna go that route.... yet

You don't need an amp or mods for the 325i. Sure, an amp will help any phone, but Grados are some of the most efficient easy-to-drive phones.
