Yeh gotta do the whole Southern Gothic thing as a package. For a more obliquely eccentric take, try Charles Portis' Dog of the South.

The entire Faulknerian Yoknapatawpha County set is a masterpiece.

William Styron's works could also be added to this genre, especially The Confessions Of Nat Turner.
