According to Epinions:

1) Advent AW770 Wireless phones ($75!!! a bargain for the #1 ranked headphone.)

2) Sennheiser HD...535 (betcha were expecting a different number, weren't ya?
biggrin.gif
)

3) Sony MDR DS5100 Virtual Dolby Headphones (like a little home theater in your head...The most expensive phones on the list at $399)

4) Pioneer SE DJ5000 Closed Headphones (Pioneer still makes headphones??)

5) Sony MDR EX70 LP Earbuds (# 2 for Sony!)

6) Koss KSC 35 (convergence!!!)

7) Koss KTX Pros (oops, diverging again...)

8) Jensen JF20 (kicks Coby's ass anyway.)

9) Sony MDR Q33LP-B W-Ear (well, he is the President.)

10) Sony MDR ED228LP earbuds (40% of the top 10 list dominated by the Japanese plastic pusher. Can Apocalypse be far away?)

that really puts things in perspective, doesn't it? I wonder how many more people review the Q33 than a decent headphone.

a sample of epinions' reviews:

"the sony streetstyles are so much better than the stock headphones that came with my mp3 player!!!! plus they look kewl on my dog!!!!!!!!!!!! they have got to be the best headphones ever (out of the two i've tried)." ***** (five out of five stars)

"the streetstyles are the worst headphones ever! they don't even match my shoes!!" * (one out of five stars)

etc...

Man, if your ears have never been exposed to anything else but Sony portable earphones, wearing the Q33 first the first time is like a revelation. Trust me, this happened to a friend of mine. I let him borrow my Q33 which I use for work at the hospital, and he phreaked out, saying that these are the best portable ones he's ever tried

Obviously, we can't compare the normal consumer to the crazy people here. I told my friend today I was going to spend $900 bucks on a headphone set, and he thought I was kidding. And I could not convince him that I was serious

But while the Q33 are of course inferior to the likes of Etymotics, they are incredibly comfortable to wear, the look might appeal to young people, and they are at least better sounding than the typical Sony earplugs.

The oddest thing about both Epinions and Audio Review is that they don't weight number of reviews X rating to determine "the best". So one lone madman who gives the Koss Plugs a 5 across the board can propel them to the top of the list ahead of say the HD600s which were reviewed by 100 people who gave them an average score of 4.75. Truly odd, though certainly it leads to some excellent lists for mocking purposes.

I was saddened to see that the $5 Coby CH47 has fallen off the Epinions Top 10. It was reviewed by some umm, rather unsophisticated homemaker who picked em up at her gym after her old headphones broke. She was greatly impressed by them, and they were right next to the Grado Rs2s on the list for a long while, though the Grados too are now off the list.

I don't know about Epinions, but I don't think Audio Review works that way.

Look at the top 3 cans at the headphones section.

1. Sennheiser HD 600
2. Sennheiser HD 580
3. Sennheiser HD 590

Muhahahahahaha! Team Sennheiser wins!

There are cans in their reviews which have gotten a higher average score, but the Senns are the ones which have got most reviews and also some of the highest scores. Not sure how their rating system works, though. (or maybe it's just Sennheiser who's bribed them

I think at Audio Review, there has be a certain number of reviews before the average score is valid.

But I guess you can "bypass" that by submitting multiple reviews for the same cans you wanna see on the top

That list made me laugh. Here's what it should be(in no particular order and IMO of course):

The Sennheiser Orpheus
The Stax Omega II
The Grado HP-1 with reference cord
The Sony R-10
The AKG K-1000
The Audio Technica W2002
The Sennheiser HD600
The Etymotic ER4-S
The Grado RS-1
The Alesandro Music Series Pro

Why are there so many stinking Grado so-called headphones there on the list?

Audio Reviews 16 (?) Top Picks for Headphones:

01. Senn HD600
02. Senn HD580
03. Senn HD590
04. Grado SR80
05. Senn HD535
06. Sony MDR V900
07. Grado SR60
08. Grado SR125
09. Grado RS1
10. Grado SR125
11. Grado SR325
12. Koss PortaPro
13. Senn HD433
14. Senn HD570
15. Sony MDRV700DJ
16. Sony MDRV6

This list is indeed ranked by rating x number of votes and is somewhat more satisfactory than Epinions as a result. Though Grado would probably not be pleased, and there are still a few wankers like the Sony 700 & 900, and the Senn 433 & 570 on the list...The only phone to appear on both Epinions and Audio Reviews top 10 list? The Senn 535. Hmm!

Are these the most underrated phones on Head-Fi???

Here is my take on some of those reviewers on both sites:

MOST OF THOSE REVIEWERS WHO GAVE FOUR OR FIVE STARS TO A PAIR OF CRAPTACULAR HEADPHONES DON'T WANT TO HEAR THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PAIR OF GREAT AUDIOPHILE HEADPHONES AND A PAIR OF SEVERELY OVERPRICED CRAPOLA.
