I went all vintage (minus portables), check sig, after realizing I was wasting SO much money on "slightly" used gear. My vintage gear blows away the "new" phones I've owned at a 1/4 the cost.
As long as build quality holds up, so should the sound. Luck.

My AKG K240s were built in the late 70s AFAIK. They sound excellent and still look good.
