Welcome to the club ! Mine's always been a dedicated music player, sounding "almost" as good as my V20. My suggestion is to load up & acquire the player app (Roon?) and any others you think you'll want before they shut out Pie: even many app updates they're trying to push to my Pie platform no longer work with Pie. Android level is the only reason I've moved on from my V20 to V40 (got a V30, too). If you're lucky enough that your V40 still has LG's killer FM, as soon as you accept a platform upgrade it will cancel FM radio functionality. If your V40 found a way to upgrade beyond Pie, it's likely a memory.

Enjoy the great sound while you can !! Very impressed you found it taking a TB SD - can you share the specific chip brand & part no. ??
Thank you for accepting.

I don't see FM radio apps or if it is in korean text, mine is korean version but set into english , this used phone come with Android 9.0. May I know what is the FM radio apps name? My LG V40 model no. LM-V409N.

As I have Roon Core (Intel NUC) installed, so Roon apps can detect Roon Ready/Endpoint devices, such as DMP-A6, Fiio M23, and V40, I could use V40 as a streaming player to my Roon via earphone jack, or as remote control to browse my Roon's music and play them home audio system via DMP-A6 network media player.

As for the microSD, I am using Sandisk Extreme 1TB A2 , SDSQXA1-1T00-ZN6MA

My V40 has topped out at Android 9 (Pie), also. Roon is a great platform for managing music. You'll want to run phone volume setting to max in order to take full advantage of the onboard ESS & Snapdragon processing that makes the LG magic out of the phone jack, managing listening volume via downstream components. My Sandisc SD's have performed very well - I'll try their TB.

Here are screenshots showing the FM radio "app" - it's actually a built-in onboard tuner that must have a headphone or earbud cord to receive airwaves. If you don't have it, you can't get it. I think only Verizon & TMobile models offered it (until an Android update that turned it off - I had to replace 2 LGs, which I then kept offline until LG no longer pushed updates). Sorry if you don't have the FM on your model - all local FM sounds vastly superior to their equivalent online channels.

Essentially, it's like low, mid and high gain. The 40 will get much louder, in which dynamics greatly improve. In order to put it in mid gain, you have to remove the cable from the headphones, and plug the cable into the phone 1st. LG uses safety measures to prevent hearing and headphone damage. If the headphones have an impedance of 50 ohm or greater, the phone auto kicks into high gain.
Sorry to bring up this old post. I have 300 ohm HD600/HD650, should I remove these headphone cables first (from earcups?), insert the headphone cable 3.5mm jack into V40, then connect the earcups, this will activate high gain mode on V40?

I am not sure if these headphone cable resistance is more than 50 ohm (without earcup connected) when connect to V40?

Would like to seek some clarification :)

Most likely I do not have this FM radio apps that come with this used phone (factory reset korean version). I came across there is NextRadio apps (apk), I heard it's shall work if there is FM receiver chip in V40 ThinQ, correct me if I am wrong.

NextRadio offers two ways to listen to live, local FM Radio. If your device has the FM receiver chip activated, you will be able to listen to local, terrestrial FM radio which uses less data and saves your battery life compared to streaming. The activated FM chip allows you to listen to NextRadio during times of emergency, working even when cell towers are down. The cord from your headphone or stereo cable act as an antenna to receive local FM radio signals.

When I was using my hd600 unbalanced , I used the hd650 cables with them with the Sennheiser adaptor. You first insert the adaptor and then the hd600.

Just checked, my FM radio apps icon is different as it's hide under "Essential" folder as screenshot below... ya need to connect wired earphone as antenna it said.

Got it, mine came with 6.3mm female/3.5mm male adaptor too . Thanks for the 💡

Indeed looks as though your Korean model originally came with onboard FM ! It should receive terrestrial FM when a "wire" (headphone cord) is plugged in. However, my icons "grayed out" and quit functioning on my LGs when Nougat ► Oreo (7►8) got pushed onto my phone, so no longer worked. Neither LG nor group help blogs came up with a fix.

Best of luck trying to light up your 300Ω cans from the phone jack - my prime cans are 300Ω & 600Ω, and I have never found sufficient power from any cell phone.

Connecting any 3.5mm adapter first will merely trigger AUX mode. You want to connect your high impedance headphones (in this case your HD600/650) directly into the jack of the V40 in order to trigger the High Impedance quad DAC mode.
Download the Hi-Fi Status(LG) app as it pings a push notification to prove what mode your V40 Quad DAC is in.

Thanks, that's my thought...with only adaptor, I can't see the phone detects the impedance, only when headphone connected , for my case, 300 ohms will be detected.

Thanks for the recommended apps, without that i could not see high impedance or high gain mode , only see Quad DAC engaged when plug in headphone.

Another thing you can do is connect any hi impedance headphones to the adapter then plug the adapter. You can then remove the hi impedance headphones (but not the adapter) and your phone will stay in hi impedance mode.

Cool to hear that ! Thanks for the tips.

Last night I was listening to John William's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban with my 300ohm Sennheiser HD600, V40 can drive it with ease, the soundstage is so damn good, music instruments are well presented with clarity, good separation.

Wonder, is this a Class D heaphone amplifier?
