LG V20 Sound Quality

I bought this as a phone first and for a music device 2nd. Still have DP-X1 Opus 1 and mojo so plenty of great sounding devices.

Awesome bro!  I'm so glad you got what you wanted!

I had a working phone with a decent external DAC/Amp and OTG cables, so I had absolutely no need for a new phone.

However, I bought this as an all-in-one (DAP+Phone), so I could have the convenience of carrying around just one device with excellent SQ instead of needing 2 devices (phone + DAC/Amp) or 3 devices (phone, DAP, DAC/Amp).

Having a stack at home/office is fine for me and I'm not getting rid of my DAC/Amp either, but I'm a bit tired of carrying around some kind of massive multi-part rig just for good SQ.

To each their own!!

  Any other settings you use on PowerAmp? Like DVC, equalizer etc?

@GermanguyUS - I typically use DVC and the equalizer in PowerAmp.

EQ requires a fair amount of direct testing to get non-horrible results over a large variety of source volume and quality, IME.

I personally prefer the sound I get when I adjust the equalizer pre-amp down and have the Limiter off, rather than the default configuration which has the EQ at neutral pre-amp and relies on the Limiter DSP to handle overloaded freq bands.  The Limiter produces substantially more distortion than simply lowering the gain of the pre-amp south of neutral, especially in the bass/sub-bass region.  It's hard to predict which tracks will run afoul of the limiter, so I calibrate using a known loud track.  The Limiter DSP is on by default and you can see if you are triggering the Limiter DSP by watching the the freq spectrum display for white tips.  The white tips indicate those bands are hitting the Limiter, so keep turning down the preamp until you never see the white tips and then you can safely turn off the Limiter DSP.  It's detail and accuracy at the price of maximum volume, but at standard settings I max-out my comfort at about volume 20 on my least sensitive 'phones, so for me, this is a vast improvement at no actual cost because my 'phones still hit max comfortable volume around 30-35, well within the distortion-minimum zone @eio has found for us and plotted.

I also downshift everything but the sub-bass band (31 Hz) and the top treble band (16KHz), because my personal equal volume perception hearing curve requires that I raise sub-bass and the high treble a fair amount above neutral for audio to actually sound neutral to my ears with all parts and pieces equally audible, similar to most people.  This is especially true at the lower volume levels I prefer to listen at, where equal volume curves tend to be even more exaggerated in bass and treble.  I find there is more distortion when I only raise those two bands north of neutral by 5-6 notches compared to lowering all the bands between them by 2-3 notches south of neutral and raising 31 Hz, and 16 KHz 2-3 notches north of neutral.  Basically a sharp "U", with the trough below neutral and the peaks above neutral is the setup I favor in PowerAmp based on several days of adjustments.

I'm a minimize distortion, maximize clarity, minimize volume kind of guy and I hope that the above helps you optimize your experience!!

  Poweramp is for kids.  If you really want to be amazed install viper4android:

Sure ... UNLESS you don't want to brick your carrier-locked phone by rooting it.

I'm sure that many have unlocked phones and can root to their little heart's desire, but far more don't.

Good reminder that V4A exists for unlocked phones, tho.

Edit:  This will come in handy about 2-3 years from now, when I can get AT&T to unlock my phone and they will be legally required to comply and not brick my s***.

Edit x2:  You do realize that currently V4A only supports up to 'Droid 6.0 OS and these ship with 7.X OS, right @ljnew?

V4A is an enhancement dsp filter, which can be fun to use, but imho it has nothing to do with hifi.

if you like that sound, maybe you can try dolby atmos effects that some phones carry. it is good in that domain.

I had At&t years ago, it was like prison.  I don't know how you could do it.

I'm guessing you never used it on the v20 correct??

Edit::

Dolby in no way competes with Viper.

It's something like the other guy said about technical specs vs. good sound.  I really like my music to sound really good without caring about technical jargon or graphs , but I digress.

Edit 2::

I find (practically speaking) , adding more balanced armatures and sometimes upgrading pass lgv10/lgv20 is huge waste of money.  The same sound or upgrade can be accomplished by installing viper4android.
