LETSHUOER S12 - Next big planar? (Impressions & Discussion)

has someone tried this intersting mod, covering half of the tube with micrporous tape ?
inexpensive, easy to do and is supposed to :
1/ reduces treble
2/ brings up the vocal range
3/ increases bass response ( i have some doubts about this last claim because it look like https://www.audioreviews.org/how-to-remove-treble-peaks/ that only reduces trebble, though covering half the tube is easier to do as you have less precision cutting/sticking to do )

I also have some over-ear headphones so would rather get a device that would be versatile enough to handle both. Gryphon is also > Go Bar in terms of pure SQ as far as I know, based on the Go Bar thread?

Only benefit to Go Bar is the compact form factor… and I guess not needing to worry about charging.

GO Bar is the one if you don't need wireless inputs and batteries. Some would even say that on SQ it's not too far off from our xDSD Gryphoin

my experience of high/low gain on btr5 did not change the sound at all on my s12 (at least to my ears). i know we often read "more power= better sound" but please challenge this affirmation by doing your own comparison. this generation of small size planar for iem don't require a lot of power like bigger planar full size headphones do. more amplification brings more noise and distortion if these are what you are looking for to color the sound in a pleasant way for your individual taste then ok go for it, otherwise if you want the cleanest sound remember that iem (unlike full size can with high impedance) don't need extra amplification in the audio pipeline after the dac output.
Can you tell me hi gain will damage my s12. Hi gain tested with blon03 sounds like driver is exploding, tearing. It's 60ohm to 300ohm.

A bit late to the game on these, but I am impressed. Very impressed.

I agree. Get a good seal, give them a little power and enjoy. The way the S12 reproduces bass textures, drum skins and wound strings is so realistic. We are going to get many Planars coming out shortly and the S12 are a great example and one of my favorites.

There are plenty, and all cost a ton more. The S12 competes with higher end iems in staging and overall largeness and openess of sound, BUT, it has flaws as do all planars. Tribrids don't have the compromises.

Just out of curiosity:

Any Tribrids or TOTL IEMs on the market with very similar sound signature to S12?

I have the S12 set, and I believe it and the Timeless are both excellent examples of the planar character most reviewers had gotten used to from planar headphones. Even taking that into account the “signatures” shouldn’t be considered similar, but similar enough to buy. I purchased the S12 set for comfort. I’ve bought into DD since, but I keep comin’ back…

Can you explain it with more details? Unfortunately I haven't heard any Tri-Brids yet but I'm very interested if it's worth to go any deeper into the rabbit hole :relieved:

Switched over to the Azla Crystal tips on the S12 and they’re great! The Crystal version of these tips are less tacky than the Xelastic, somewhat more pliable, a little thicker and fit my ears perfectly. As far as my personal experience goes these seem to fix most of the things I dislike about the Xelastic.

Oh, and anyone who says the S12 lacks bass should probably try these tips.

Oh? Have you tried them with Moondrop Springtips? If so how would they compare? I might add on a set to the Dioko order.
