Lets Talk Metal

Leprous and Anubis Gate don't really work for me. I love progressive metal, but power - not so much. If there's a genre I like less than symphonic/operatic metal, its power metal.

Anubis Gate is prog/power mix. Leprous is more prog rock than anything else. I don't really consider them power (though its fine you don't like either).

On a side note, I can't really get into the new Mastodon that well. Its IS good, but its a bit trippy for my tastes.

It's funny i love those genres. If there is any metal genre i listen to less it's black and doom metal. Although i still enjoy them.

I'm a bit of a metal noob, the bands I listen to are few but loved dearly. I'm quite a fan of the general concepts of funeral doom, 'metalgaze', grindcore and drone metal, (stuff that dabbles in the abstract but has a good bit of weight to throw around) but I haven't found a large amount of bands that satisfy my tastes (I can probably name all the metal bands that really enthuse me on my fingers).

If anyone thinks they have any recommendations for more metal that fits my bill, that'd be great. My last.fm profile would be a good place to get more insight about my tastes. http://www.last.fm/user/Lolicorez

Listening to Neurosis' 'Enemy Of The Sun' right now, btw. Such a brilliant album.

haha i was about to say the exact same thing, Anubis Gate is definitely proggy power, but Leprous is pretty much just prog to me...

I'm a big fan of all kinds of doom, and drone. I'll try to give you a good list of the genre's best, IMO

Doom Metal:

Electric Wizard:

Reverend Bizzare:

Drone Metal:

Sunn O))):

Sludge(This is where Isis would fit in, but sludge incorporates a lot of other genres into it, I'm a fan of sludgy black metal myself)
A Storm of Light:

For Funural Doom, I don't think you can beat Funeral, and for grincore try Napalm Death's Scum album, and the band Regurgitate.

If you want more, you can always check out my last.fm in my signature, lots of black metal, and a good amount of drone/doom. :D

Wormphlegm, Catacombs, Tyranny and Nortt are my basic recommendations whenever Funeral Doom arises.

Wormphlegm. Here is a shortened fanmade music video.

Tyranny. Another band from Wormphlegm guys with Lovecraft themes.

Nortt. Mix of funeral doom music and black metal sound.

Catacombs. More Lovecraftian funeral doom.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll check out all of them. I'm already a big fan of Electric Wizard and The Angelic Process, Weighing Souls With Sand is one of my all time favourite albums.

In regards to grindcore, I'm probably just getting things mixed up and missing some genre name that perfectly describes what I want, but I like the idea of grindcore that's slow, like funeral doom with the noisy riffage of grindcore.

This is one of the only tracks that fits the bill for what I'm interested in:

i like some doom, i cant ever seem to get enough of Swallow the Sun, they're so good!

One of the absolute best. Seriously, these guys have not put out a bad album.

I want to state on record, despite what you may or may have not heard, the new Machine Head just rocks in every single way. Its a solid release. Its not Blackened. But its darn good American metal.

EDIT: Anybody like Skeleton Witch? They are teh bring of a new release.
