Lets Talk Metal

I'm gonna have to go with Buried with Leeches by Dragged Into Sunlight. The band brings a lot of grindcore and black metal influences in, but that gritty, distorted death metal production is what sells this record for me.

Nice! I bought this album a few months ago when I saw them live. Great stuff.

You know, Dragged Into Sunlight's last one was too over-hyped. That album was not nearly as good as it it should have been IMO.

True true...

Anybody picking up Moonsorrow Boxset today?

I really really wish I could...
How can I call Moonsorrow my favorite band without owning this monstrosity?! :'(
Man, I would pay lots of money for some proper vinyl rips of it....

I've been listening to Lord Mantis this week comparing Pervertor and Death Mask. Pervertor is one of my favorite metal releases in the last couple of years. Death Mask is pretty grueling to get through-but it's growing on me.

Strange you would post this markm1, been attempting to get into it too. It takes effort.

I just thought it was because it's a certain style I'm not used to? I need to hear their earlier record.

It does take effort, indeed, but it has its rewards. I really liked the blackened sludge of Pervertor. An interesting variety of styles. I can definitely say-at this point-I enjoy listening to Pervertor more in terms of repeat listening.

Pervertor IMO had a wider range of sounds-some DM vocals mixed in with the harsher BM vocals. I'd say they upped the sludge quotient on this one. In some ways it reminds me of acts like Coffinworm, Dragged into Sunlight and vocally I'm getting a Xasthur feel-pure excruciating  harshness. A little drone.

But, now that I've heard it a few times, I'm hearing little nuances that were more obvious on Pervertor. Pervertor is definitely dark and nasty like the aforementioned acts, but it feels like they were playing with the ideas like a novelist. This person of an album, goes all in-like you accidentally stumble onto the set of a snuff film and think, schiit-I better get the hell outa here...

I found the following on Metalsucks:

Fell explains in an email to MetalSucks: “I had nearly zero idea of how to put my misery into words when we did Pervertor. When I listen back, a lot of the riffs kinda sound like party rock, like ‘Pervertor Of The Will’ or ‘Vile Divinity.’ We got rid of most those headbang riffs and have honed it down to a solid crush.” Expect no reprieve in the messages in The Death Mask, their first for indie powerhouse Profound Lore records, either. Fell: “I really was able to connect with what I was writing for lyrics; this time I had a lot more ammo. A bunch of health issues and personal ******** [had] taken my quality of life to zero. You can definitely hear it.”

But it seems Fell and crew, like listeners, don’t achieve catharsis; membership in Lord Mantis doesn’t teem with privileges, says Fell: “Well, it’s always been a frustrating band to be in; there’s a lot of in-fighting, nobody in the band is really friends, and we’re definitely not that band that gets invited to a bunch of cool ****.” Feeding LM’s vibe of purgatorial woe even more is their association with another troubled Chicago band. “I think [our] Nachtmystium connection has really ****ed us on a lot of levels. Doing this album was a sickeningly negative experience and we got it done by all means and manipulation — though it was pretty close to not happening at all… I have ruined my life doing this ****.”

I get zero party rock from Pervertor, but I take his point between the two albums. Sometimes the death crush might be more than I want to listen to. I guess I kind of like good old fashioned "headbanging riffs".

Regardless-they're both great albums.

I do think this will be one of the defining and important releases of 2014. It's just-personally-I need a little light at the end of the tunnel.
