Lets Talk Metal

Metalcore is bit controversial genre anyway. I dont really get Lamb Of God musically either, but I am quite certain they kick ass on live, I hope. That kind of music should work live anyway. Earlier Machine Head is one of the better groove metal stuff out there, so I am 100% sure they are fantastic on live. I would be gravely dissapointed if they dont, I remember their Burn My Eyes and More Things Change albums fondly from my teen years.

I just picked up the new Hatebreed CD "For the Lions"...it's good. Their cover of Metallica's "Escape" is stellar! Also the HB album has introduced me to some old punk/hardcore bands that I had never heard of...like sheer terror, merauder, the cro-mags...pretty cool.

I too was pretty prejudiced against Slipknot due to the nu-metal/commercialism aspect...BUT...I must say, their new album is pretty badass....some serious heavy grooves on there and good lyrics too...

I didn't used to really like LoG either but their latest album is quite good...interesting lyrics too...they been doin a little thinking

I mentioned it before in a separate thread but you may have missed it

check out The Blackening by Machine Head.. their 2008 album.. or was it 2007.. anyway its the latest and its a masterpiece IMO..easily their best IMO .. get the special edition if you can.. their cover of Hallowed Be Thy Name is BETTER then the original.. and their cover of Battery is an equally good (albeit heavier) version (not better then original, just heavier/different)

Agreed Machine Head's The Blackening is a masterpiece. Also for a taste of their live sound, the album Hellalive is worthwhile and I don't really care for live recordings (as opposed to the real thing, saw them in '97).

Gojira's The Way of All Flesh doesn't seem to be as cohesive as From Mars to Sirius imo but it's definitely more realized then their first 2 LPs.

Comparisons to Korn are laughable, even the Meshuggah comparison which is most commonly used doesn't make any sense to me though. Hold On by Cloudkicker is a little closer imo even though there's no lyrics.

I mean Komparison to Korn as they have the same "rythm" in some of their songs. :p

I agree The Blackening is quite good. I like all the MH albums...Burn My Eyes and The More Things Change are my faves but The Burning Red is quite good too

I just re-listened to Akercocke's Words That Go Unspoken, Deeds That Go Undone through my Grado 225s. Gorgeous album, a real trophy of the extreme metal scene. It's like the album was MADE for my headphones, and I know it wasn't. Verdelet alone was exceptionally powerful, with every note full of attack, and very little blurring, given that the notes are so fast. Plenty of dynamics, full of depth, an absolute must for any fan of extreme metal. I can hear black, death, even grind influences in this music, all while flowing smoothly like a well orchestrated progressive metal album.

It's experiences like this that makes my interest in headphones all the more worthwhile.

That album is great, and about cans for metal, i've just got a pair of AD900 yesterday, i have to say that they are good metal cans, for heavy\power and other standard stuff, almost any phone with a bit of bass impact is good, but when it comes to exteme metal i am rather picky, the AD900 have all the speed and Prat of a grado, plus the great advantage of being non fatiguing even with less than optimal recordings, for example Opeth's first two albums are unlistenable for me with the 225, far too aggressive sounding, but perfectly enjoyable on the ATH...needless to say that the superbly produced Deliverance, sounds equally good on both...with a different flavour of course...

Even the fastest double bass runs on Nile albus sound crystal clear both with the AD900 and the Sr225, unlike the slight muddyness of the dt-990 ( other great cans for metal and rock IMO, the bass looses control only on insanely fast music...if the recording is good, that slightly exagerated bass response is just spectacular

I've yet to hear a 2009 that's really set things on fire for me though.

I thought Lamb of God had it with Wrath after listening to the opening track segue to the second but the rest of the album never lived up to that grandiosity.

You guys need to check out the following:

Ulcerate - Everything Is Fire
Fleshgod Apocalypse - Oracles
Decrepit Birth - Diminishing Between Worlds
Hour of Penance - The Vile Conception
Severed Savior - Servile Insurrection
General Surgery - Corpus In Extremis - Analysing Necrocriticism
Mumakil - Behold the Failure
Brutal Truth - Evolution Through Revolution
Neuraxis - The Thin Line Between

Especially Ulcerate...it's seriously quite a pioneering fusion of Gorguts/Immolation/Deathspell Omega/Hate Eternal vibes.

Listening Ulcerate on myspace. Hate Eternal vibe is definetly evident. As is Gorguts Obscura era somewhat, with their funny sounds and all.

*edit* Second song is definetly Gorguts, almost ripoff.
