I know almost nothing about sound science. I understand the very bare-bottom basics of analog vs digital, including a rough understanding of quantization, but my knowledge comes to a dead halt there. And I'm curious.

Could you fine sirs recommend some reading material that I could find freely online or at a local library on the subject of sound science? I'm interested in knowing all there is to know on the subject.

Thanks in advance.

Have you browsed the library at Pete Millett's website? There's a huge amount of information there.

While not quite what you're looking for, have you thought about building an amp? You will pick up a lot in the process.
