LAiV Harmony R2R DAC Impression and Reviews

Although DAC SQ differences are often overestimated, speaker and room differences are often orders of magnitude greater, so other speakers/rooms may give completely different results.
However this topic is about LAiV Harmony DAC, not room acoustics.

Beside, acoustics is more about quantity, DAC is more about quality..

I think that's not a problem, because this company sent speakers at hole world
I heard of flat earth, but hole world?

Sorry, such a lame joke but I couldn't resist. 😄

I know in Poland there is a huge market for hifi. Lots of people, including young people appreciate hifi. And there are lots of companies that make HiFi products. New and innovative. I remember Lampizator Lukasz started as a tube tweaker webpage and now look at him. I bought a very nice mono cartridge (Miyajima) there for a very nice price.

For those who like to compare: Harvey Lovegrove put in some extra effort for us to compare different styles of DACs. His lossless recordings are available for free on the Pearl Acoustics website.

If I lived in Poland like you, I would buy the same speakers :dt880smile:
They actually present in many countries now

Hi everyone! I just got the LaiV Harmony DAC used for a great price. I also have a ZMF Caldera but am still looking for an amp to round out my desktop setup. I would love any input or feedback on amps that synergize well with Calderas & Harmony DAC. Preferably something $2500 and under. 😃

Amps I’ve considered: Flux Mentor, Burson Soloist 3XGT, Gustard H26, GS-X Mini, GS-X MK2, Violectric V222 and upcoming LAiV amp to just name a few.

EDIT: Added some amps I’ve been looking into thus far

I have changed my display settings. I already saw burn-in (less bright pixels). So I really advise you to not let it burn constantly.

And after I did this I also noticed some behavior I never saw anything else do before. If you use any ir-remote, any button, it turns on. That's smart! So you always see the info when you change something. And after a few seconds it's back to Black.

Appreciate the head’s up/caution, I’ve been meaning to try it set to auto-off, sounds super smart indeed.

Gives a whole new meaning to the question "How long does it take to burn in?" 😁
Good point. But also that this burn in is visibly real. BUT! This loss of brightnes doesn't follow the same aging tendency as other components. All components age differently.

Also; here's a thought experiment on upsampling.
Which picture contains more information. Not data. Information.
And which do you prefer and why?

Same as 1 but resized to 2x the size and used filter 'unsharp mask'

Yes, I exaggerated, but that's just to make a point.
Here's a 3rd without processing only blown up

Which one has the most information? And which one do you prefer?
(One caveat: I stored them as jpg so not lossless, but that doesn't change my point. More data does not equate to more information).

You're under warranty...I would suggest your reach out to Laiv to see what they say. I'm not aware that they disclaim screen burn-in as a warranty item, so they should address it.

I also observed similar "burn-in" on the screen.. Been less than a month since I bought it.

Why? I think it's normal for an OLED screen that you shouldn't put it on full brightness continuously. It's not malfunctioning.

I’d suggest that screen burn-in after such a short period of ownership is not normal, nor should it be acceptable.
Oleds are known for high contrast and low power use and that there's no backlight needed. On the negative side is known that it performs better with constantly changing images because oleds lose brightness over time when they burn bright.

So would you rather have a constantly lit grey square when you listen in the dark? Or a screen that is completely black?

As always: it's a compromise decision by the engineer and, or designer. I'd not make a wild guess if it states in the manual (that I didn't read of course, but I know Wang Fei advised it) to not let your screen burn constantly on high setting.
I rather have a really black screen instead of constantly looking at a bright TFT.
