Re: Reports regarding hiss on the MR-1 - could it be, that these recordings were made with the input volume too high? I have always gone quite a long way down, recording from vinyl to DSD. Although, then, I have to go a bit up, on the player / amp during playback, it seems to help against digital distortion. May be relevant. Not much hiss that I have heard, on my recordings. I have never thought "too much hiss" comparing my Korg to my Tascam recordings (more that the sound, generally, is better - but this is mainly comparing 2 x DSD Tascam to 1 x DSD Korg, not quite fair...).

Thanks analogsurviver - OFF is very much needed some times!
Re: Korg-1000. This is a good one, but for me now, the Tascam does my recording OK (is semi-portable), so what I am looking for is mainly a convenient, highly portable DSD-capable player. Like most of us...in a while...
Player only - smartphone + iFi iDSD nano (highly portable) or micro (twice the size, performance, battery life - but not necessary better sounding ). There are quite strigent requirements for phones and for DSD only recently introduced SD card from Kingston has "enough" capacity - and is not (yet?) supported by any phone I know of. Perhaps in 12 moths...
I am going to OFFing for a little while - while transfering today's yield of GBs to my RAID array...

I meant for MASTER recordings - microphone>outboard pramp>(Korg) recorder.
I will go into this in a day or two in more detail - tomorrow I have test "ultrasonic loundermat Monday" for LPs and tons of chores on Tuesday - but I will get back to you ASAP.
Periscope down ...
Master recordings - well, vinyl drops are master too - I have not experimented much with the MR-1 as a field recorder. Some more, recently, with the Tascam, noting that, even using two high quality Rode mics, "nature sound" is not easy to get right. No special hiss problem however.
Analogsurvivor has mailed a sonic link that puts my broad formulation "vinyl drops are master too" in some doubt. Great music, very well recorded, illustrating the power of the Korg MR-1000 that he used for a live recording,
In my own more modest-use case, I am happy that the MR-1 did in fact work, on our recent holiday.
Even if the user interface is jerky and jumps up and down in the hierarchy. Having 70 gb of music along, in DSD, is much more useful than the standard 18 or so. And even if the DAC is not state of the art it understands DSD and plays it back very nicely, thank you. In my rig, the Tascam DA-3000 performs better, but the Korg Mr-1 has performed well too.
The main fact is - the Korg records and plays DSD ok. This standard should have been taken up ten years ago. Now, we are witnessing a return. DSD is becoming available in portable players too. For example, the Pono player has announced a DSD play firmware upgrade. And others. Probably some of them work better than the Mr-1 (like, e g the Astell and Kern 240), but I have not seen comparative testing.
Best regards, Oystein

Dear all
The time has come to say farewell to my old and belowed (but problematic) Korg MR-1.
Since I modded it to get a larger hard disk in place (as discussed earlier in this thread), we have never quite been friends.
The Korg would not do this, or would not do that.
It worked, but no longer optimally.
Some months ago it started showing serious signs of non-functioning.
I started looking for a replacement.
I have ordered a Fiio x3ii.
I hope it delivers the DSD playback quality of the Korg - or better.
If there is interest, I can test and report back (have not seen this comparison on the web).
