I'm thinking of getting the AKG K702's or K271 MKII's as my primary home headphones. Here are some of the bands and musicians I listen to most. Which ones would you recommend or shoud I go with something else? My budget ir $250 tops. I was thinking of getting the SR325is's, but they are a little over my budget plus I don't like the foam pads. Am I making a mistake?

K702's require an amp so that's probably out of your budget.

What about the K271 MKII's, would they be good without an amp and for my taste of music? I'm open for recommendations since these would be my first serious headphones.

I think 
K702's and K271 MKII are not same class of product.
 
K702- reference headphones (same like K701 + removable cable) , you realy need good amp for full performace 
K271 MKII- studio headphones (no reference sound i think just a regular mid range headphones )

I see. What would you recommend? I have a Marantz amp at home but would like headphones that I could use with my laptop or ipod from time to time.

While I've only heard Grados higher and lower in that range I would say Grado 225 over the AKG's (owning both).  Can't say anything for the others.

 AKG K271 MKII are good closed headphones(very much used at studios).I have got Grado sr80 to and i love it for they portability and very nice "emotial and warm" sound .Grado SR225 may be good choise but can be a little bit uncomfortable.
 
You can realy enyoj AKG 702 without powerful amp but you get about 50% of they performace.(maybe less). Using with some ipod is very crazy idea i think.

this is kind of misleading. studio headphones are used to reference recordings. reference is kind of ambiguous

sorry to disappoint you, AKG K271 require almost just as much amping as a K701. I have owned the K271 and I currently own the K701. I have under-amped both with the same Ibasso D10 and the K701 seems like it requires less power. I could be recalling incorrectly but K271s do need a lot of amp power. I sold them for that very reason. However, I am fine with the K701 with my Ibasso D10. i had the Grado SR125 and SR325 before and the sound are very similar to each other. I thought the sr225 sounded too much like the 225 to be worth the extra cost. ALSO, i sold all my Grados btw. I prefer the sound of AKGs far more than Grados. I found the Grados to be ridiculously unnatural. The highest highs were incredibly exaggerated to me and the bass randomly spikes in different areas of the low range.
 
I recommend the ES7. They are great portable headphones and sound really good to me. I love the bright and punchy sound they have.  I also recommend the Sennheiser HD280, though they are ugly

I agree. also for electronic music the akg might not do the job. I would say for closed go for the es7 and if you want open headphones ms1 is a good choice. they say its 95% of the 225.

I own the K271 it is a good headphone if you need passive isolation otherwise the K240 would be more appropriate and give a more natural sound due to its semi-open nature, the K271 are used to avoid the sound to leak on recording mics hence the on/off button on it.
 
And yes it require good amping.

i like the both HPs equally well, but for different reasons.  the K271 are a little more forgiving than the K701 and play nice with everything.  if you like lots of bass, look elsewhere.  if you have $250, i would nab a pair of the K271 and commission an AMB mini3 portable HP amp for when you want to use an iPod.  for the price, the mini3 also sounds excellent with the K702.  otherwise your Marantz receiver will drive the K271 or K702 just fine.
