K701 vs. DT880 vs. HD 650

Maybe I should phrase my question like this: if I wanted to buy headphones + any other gear for my setup I'd need for under $1,500, and I wanted the most neutral possible sound without really losing any dimension of the sound, what should I buy? I know I've heard lots of great responses, but I just want to get as many opinions as I can.

Everyone really has their own idea of 'neutral'. Have you listened to other headphones? Do you know what kind of sound signature you like? Have you said it already and I just missed it? :)

I think you need to figure out what kind of sound you want in order to pick the appropriate headphone and amp.

Hmm I should give the HD650 another listen on a better amp then. I listen to classical most of the time, but the hd650 sounded muffled, or maybe thats whats the veil?

I would go with the 650s...but by a very small margin against the 701s.

Vvanrij what are you using as a amp now? Most, if not all the cans listed (701s, HD650s, DT880s) pretty much require a good amp to open up their full potential.

The only decent headphones I've tried have been Bose Triports which I know everyone on this forum hates. They actually sound great to me at low volumes, but the sound gets REALLY smashed together at high volumes. The instruments blend very poorly.

I also don't know any place around here where I can demo headhones :-/.

I keep saying this - forget AT for classical!

I love their soundsignature, but definitely not for classical!

Yup, I don't have a HD650 because I just couldn't get over the veil.
