lately i've been thinking of selling my headphones and getting either the k601 or k701's. there isn't much info on the k601's but basically are the k701's worth the extra 100 bux? i mostly listen to some hip-hop/rap, acoustic, and some rock.

the jury is still out on that one I think, everyone sais the 701 has more bass, but according to the graphs on headroom they are almost identical...

I see the saving of $100 going towards a pair of DT880s or Senn 600/650s. Then again I keep wanting those K701s to be my main cans.

AKG K701 has a bass to low midrange emphasis - K601 actually has a better FR in not having such an emphasis.

However, the emphasis is nice - gives strong bass and a slight warmth/body to the midrange.

Haven't really compared the two but I imagine that the K601 is the bargain of the century. Might need some external amp for best sound.

You should listen to it with a neutral amp, or one with near-zero output impedance, resp. -- it would probably change your mind.

I had both the 601’s and 701’s in da house. Used with both Solid-State and Tube amplification. Both are outstanding headphones. In my opinion however the 701’s are well worth the extra $100.

Unfortunately AKG wanted the loaners back. So I have been without the 701’s for a couple of months. I will be getting a pair of 701’s next month for my 45th birthday, that is if I last that long.

Since the HE90’s are no longer in production I feel that the 701’s are the best all around headphones.

Hi,

can you please tell us the main differences between K601 and K701?

I'll agree with Yikes here. The 601 lacks refinement; In the long run the 701 is such a good headphone that I think any member hear would be sorry not to cry once and spend more to get a world class can.

When is the next shipment coming in? Or no definite date yet.

Could you explain more? I am wondering if I should regret purchasing my K601? Keeping in mind your site's ratings, which would you pick up first to listen to some Jazz (if you like jazz), the K601 or an HD600? Please explain.

I might buy the HD-650 to compliment my K601.

I wanted a relaxed can to compliment my HF1.
I bought the K601.
I still want a relaxed can to compliment my HF1.

You forget a big reason for getting the top of line product instead of the "almost top of the line" product. If you buy the "inferior" choice, you will always wonder how the "better" one sounds. It might become more expensive in the end to go with the cheap choice.

Art: I did. That is where I heard the mid and upper bass emphasis.

I reported this in my comparison of the AKG K701 to the SA5000, per below:

http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=165216

Later I found these FR graphs which validated my earlier report:

FR curve of K701

FR curve of K601

These graphs clearly show the mid-bass emphasis (which extends some into the mid-range) of the K701, which is less with the K601. The above FR graphs were provided by cclragmarok on the thread :
