I don't know about "always reliable," for I did not find my SR80s murky-sounding without an amp, even when compared directly with my SR60s which I had at the same time. But then, I know the SR80 thing has been brought up before so this isn't the first time someone disagrees with them.

I took a long look at that SR80 thing aswell... Listning to Lateralus on it right now, it kicks butt (without an amplifier).

Yeah, but let's not get lost in not so relevant details... e.g. in this case 'without an amp' is a very widely variable condition.
