I've been looking for direct comparisons all over the place between the dx700 and dx1000. Could someone please elaborate on the differences? I was originally looking for a Denon D5000/7000, but the JVC came up as a worthy compeitor. Any comparisons b/w the D5000/D7000 and the DX700 would be highly appreciated as well. Pardon me for derailing the topic, but I'd rather not open up a new thread and other existing threads seem quiet.

If the DX700 sounds anything like the DX1000 then it has very good low end freq, but mids and highs are colored and not good for my taste.  The D7000 has uncontrolled lows and good mids and highs.  If the new DX-2000 can have the lows of the DX1000 and mids and highs of the Denon D7000 then I might be a real contender to the Fostex TH-900 current king of closed dynamic phone.

does the DX 700 have as much romance. Coloration can be a great thing :D

You wouldn't be surprised if you see these images that compared the size of the cubs between DX2000 and TH-900 and it describes why DX2000 has widest or even deepest sound stage for closed headphone. I'm not sure it's more 3D than Sony R10 because now my R10 is not with me for awhile (will get it back 2-3 weeks later)

At the moment, details (macro and micro) and refinement of TH-900 is still obviously better than DX2000 but note that DX2000 just passed 40 hours of burn in unlike TH-900 that reach to 400 hours already. FWIW, the new technology of birch wooden diaphragm from JVC is quite interesting, it's very well balanced sound, good high, mid and bass. It's worth the price in my opinion and it should be at the same league of TH-900.

Well, I'm personally a bit surprised because the DX1000 doesn't really knock my socks off spatially, and AFAIK the cups are the same size (ie. ginormous). From memory it was wide from left to right but not particularly deep. The improvements in the DX2000 could be a function of the way JVC is damping them.
 
Another surprise for me: the cups on the DX2000. From JVC's renders they look matte black. However from the pictures above they look lacquered like the TH900, a deeper red wine color.
