Okay I think I've Narrowed it down a bit. I'm thinking of getting one of these. Any info or suggestions would be much appreciated.

JVC RX900 - medium bass/quality, medium soundstaging
Denon AH-D1001 - slightly better bass/quality, medium soundstaging
ATH-M50 - great sound quality, poor soundstaging

Would you say this assessment is close to accurate?

I'm also considering the SA1000 for good soundstaging and slightly worse quality.

Any help would be much appreciated since I've spent a lot of time trying to figure this out.

i wouldn't say the m50 has poor soundstaging.
it's a tight soundstage.  as most closed headphones have.
the imaging and separation, are quite good.  it's just that the instruments will be a little closer to your head.

but, all are good choices, so i hear...

Ideally I would get something like the DT770 but I just can't afford that. Which of these would be closest to that?

Also, tight soundstaging for my purposes is kind of a bad thing. Not that they are bad phones though, I'm still seriously considering them.

i have had all 3, as well as the dt770 pro

rx900, great bass, recessed mids/highs, great sounstage for a closed phone

denon, nice tight bass, semi balanced sound w/extra bass, small stage

m50, great bass, slightly recessed mids and highs, medium stage

dt770- tons of mid-bass, recessed mids, weird sibilant highs

of these, the m50 was my fave, the denon neat but too small for me, the rx900 too recessed in the highs but a fun headphone, never cared for the dt770 pro
