I'm considering returning/selling the FXT90s for the FX700s for the improved soundstage, which leads me to my next question. Are the strain relief thingies at the base of the housings (I don't know what they're really called) too long for the phones to be worn over the ear? Like, do they stick out?

X3 on over the ear with the FX700, I just took them on a long airplane trip and it's the best way to go for me as well.

Although I prefer to wear mine cable down, I'm curious to how the FX700 was on the plane?

They're not the best at isolation, but that's never been a priority for me as I don't like to be completely closed off from my surroundings.
As long as they don't leak I'm fine and nobody complained

The stem on the FX700 was a little long for me when worn over the ear. Like the stem ended at the top of my ear so the cable didn't have a whole lot to latch onto. Average and larger sized ears shouldn't really have a problem though. And yeah the isolation isn't at all as good the FXT90, and nearly non-existent if wearing them with a loose fit to lighten the bass response. Soundstage is super wide though. They reminded me of having tower speakers strapped to my head, in a good way :)

Holla. What a nicely written review. So, have anyone found another successor to the FX -700? One year I am gone and nothing new has come out yet?

I have sent my JH16 back for reshell so now I have to rely solely on the Fx700.

hello koonhua90.
i would like to update you on this, the answer is the MEELEC cc51.
i cant say an upgrade to the fx700, but very similar in timbre and as detailed as the fx700 but doesnt sound like recessed from the mids.

what youll get is :
fun, sweet sounding and more balanced.
with that nice timbre like the one found in the fx700.

with this youll be surprise with all your tracks, it (everything) would sound new to you.

this is my fave iem right now.
i sold my fx700 already to a friend, and with the cc51, i dont feel like im missing it.
with the cc51, i dont have to spend a lot to experience audio bliss.

i would also like to clear that its not 100% similar, but still, its close.
and it may also be different in to some extent.
comparing this only from memory.

If you want to try the CC51 for cheap...

At least I'm thinking it's the same. Will confirm tomorrow.

Does those CC51 really have the same bass quality and extension than the FX700????

This is what I'm primarily interested in knowing. If the CC51 has even close to the bass weight, depth, and texture of the FX700, color me interested.

I've owned the cc51 at one point and the timber and bass definition was not on par with the fx700.  I will say it was my favorite earphone for some time.  It has nice balance and price to performance ratio is outstanding.  By far the best earphone from meelec.
