There's a fine line between keeping the highs in check, and killing total SPL.

That's correct, the more foam you put in, the the less harsh the highs become. Of course the type of foam you use also matters.

Are there any IEM's that can match the bass quantity of the 'Mellows?

yes, the atrio m5 and super fi 5 EB both provide deep, rich bass that may actually surpass the marshmallows. The difference however, is that those 2 iem's will offer better high's and mid's than the marshmallows (not to mention that these iems cost upwards of $120)

I'm sold on the Atrio's. Thanks.

I just did this mod without taking apart the tube. I simply used a needle and used it to cut the paper i2. I then used a pair of tweezers to pull out the paper. It came out with little problem.

I haven't done the mod on the FX33's, but did replace the stock tips with some ebay replacement tips for the Shure E2c or Senn CX300 on my FX32's.

They are now much more comfortable, and actually stay in my ears, unlike before.

Soundwise, I feel the highs have suffered a small bit, but worth the tradeoff for the added comfort.

mmmm.. i just did this mod.. Sounds a bit muffled, but not so synthetic as before. Maybe i put too much foam? It def. got rid of the harsh highs, but bass is still a bit hard. I wonder if i can get crisper highs, but not so synthetic as before?

First, hello Head-Fi.

Next, was trolling around head-fi found this thread. Intrigued, I did a quick search and found these on circuit city for 9 bucks. I said "why the hell not" and bought two pair.
Like everyone has said the bass was bad so I did the mod.
And here is the result.

As for sound, myself not being a true audiophile, agree with the above mentioned comments about the fixed bass and overall improvement.
I also like how it matches my clip.

Wow... that's my exact set-up... I'm using slightly different silicon tips though... Are those Sony tips?
