Only for classical music (violin and orchestra)

Which has the best sound quality?

which has the second best sound qualty?

which one is the worst?

Price is not the problem

A900 is kind of out of place here, it's a $200 phone being compared to $700-$1000 ones. You might want to look more at the W5000 for audio technica's offering.

A900 will almost certainly be the worst of the list, but just because it's in a muuuuuuuuuuch lower price bracket.

Yeah, don't judge a headphone by it's price.

The Denon D5000 can be had new for $420 yet stores also carry it for $500-$1000. Don't fall into the trap of perceived quality because of price.

A Ferrari at $100,000 is a Ferrari. At $50,000 its a hell of a value.

Totally agree. Consider what I nice phone the AKG 501 was for $150, which is also a great choice for classical. I think a seller on Ebay has a batch of NOS on sale right now.

Sorry, One more comment: I think ben999imcs's original consideration of the Edition 9 (not the A900?) for classical may have merit. I've only read one or two positive reviews on it for this genre, but they were glowing. I have not heard this phone personally.

But for classical strings, its a tough call between the DX1000 and the D5000. In general I'd say the D5000 is better at reproducing the warm tonality and texture of strings, which is more important to me than soundstage. However, the DX1000 can make lesser quality CD's (of which there are so many of in the classical world) a bit more tolerable. A Markl modded D5000 is fabulous with classical music and more convincing IHMO than the HD650, which many headfiers consider the best for this genre.

What do you think of the markl D5000 for trance and ambient music?

I'm really trying to decide between a markl D5000 and an AD2000, and trance and ambient is like 90% of what I listen to.

If you're considering to buy the D5000, also look into the D2000. The only physical differences between the two are the cable quality and the outer housing material (D5000 uses wood and the D2000, aluminum). They both use the same 50mm driver. And supposing you recable your headphones with something superior to what's used in both the D2000 and D5000, you'll be left with only one difference, the outer casing material, which won't be significant enough to enhance SQ in my opinion, considering how relatively thin the housing is in both models.

When the thread was first posted, the A900 was listed as well as the DX1000, D5000, and Ed. 9.

Please stop! d2000 and d5000 have the same drivers, true, but how about the matching? It is the same? Edition 9 and prolines (PROline 750?) share the same driver, same with sr125 and sr225 etc. The difference between the E9 and proline is the design, and the difference between sr125 and sr225 is mainly the driver matching.
Let's say 210$ (d2000 - one of the lowest price you can find) + APS v3 (250$ 6 feet - it is better than d5000 cable as you said) = 460$ = pretty much the same price as the d5000 (plus you have warranty and some nice woodcaps) (not talking about "the outer casing material" and design wich IMHO have a huge impact in sound, not just in headphones!)

housing makes a massive difference. in some phones that are very similar it can be the difference of a rumble to a boom. plastic echoe to an uncontrolled fast echo that is like a burp.

housing is madly important. that is why there are very few high end phones that don't have some sort of very nice wood or something. it is huge even with low end phones.

In case of Denon it doesn't, they serve only aesthetic purpose. Larry from headphile posted his observation on the design a while ago. Plus the difference between D2000 and D5000 signature flavors is totally not what usually comes from wooden housing. You can check Skylab D2000/D5000 review and some japanese blogs discussing that.
That leaves only the cable and this is what Alex says

Most who compared recabled D2000 with stock D5000 seem to agree with this assessment.

Yup, agreed. My APS cabled D2000 indeed sound better than the stock D5000 and D2000 I have listened to. No markl mods needed, as the bass is now controlled and not overpowering with the APS cable. (both stock Denon suffered from farty flabby bass).
