But why such a big fm tuner? Or is it some world receiver capable of tuning into stations broadcasting from antarctica?

A good, tube FM tuner is one of the hidden secrets of audiophilia. Put your ears on one some time, you'll love it.

I have heard that before. I've owned several tuners, including a Cyrus, a Magnum Dynalab, and the seriously under-rated Realistic TM-1001. Whatever else you do or do not do, DO NOT buy or use any quartz-locked *****. Oh, the horror!
