Aw, give 'em a break, they had no sound in space (a first for sci-fi series)

Love the show on Sci-fi, have yet to order the box set, got Serenity a couple days ago.

The actors had a lot of difficulty with the Chinese. It's a short feature in the box set of the TV series. I don't speak Mandarin well, but I speak Cantonese and I can tell they're butchering it. Oh well, it's future Mandarin

Yeah, they did a great job with the no sound in space thing; can't remember which episode it is, but when they have a big action scene happening in space with no sound at all then suddenly cut to inside the ship and kick in the soundtrack, it's incredibly effective.

mysticaldodo / hiwire: yeah, you could put a "charitable" interpretation on it, but really I think it's just down to the impossibility of teaching a bunch of non-Chinese people proper pronounciation in no time. Chinese pronounciation is so utterly different from English it's just a flat out non-starter, I think.

IIRC the reason Joss Whedon put some Mandarin into the dialogue was because in his version of the future the only two nations that would survive WWIII (or whatever other disaster happens to earth) would be China and America, which also explains why it is Mandarin and not Cantonese or any other Chinese dialogue. Eventually the languages and cultures of the two countries would mix so that everyone would be able to speak both Chinese and English interchangeably.

I speak Cantonese natively and know a bit of Mandarin and while I think the actors do butcher the Chinese language (sometimes beyone recognition), they do give it a good shot. Mandarin is a difficult language to learn especially for people that have never heard it spoken before.

Back to Firefly, I've seen the whole DVD set but not the movie yet. I really liked it and thought it had potential even though I didn't care much for Buffy or Angel. I heard that they were planning to continue the series somewhere on cable, but I can't remember where I read it. Anyone else know what I am talking about?

From what I last heard they were waiting to see how the movie faired before they decided what they wanted to do with Firefly (i.e., dump it, only movies, or seek a new network for the show), these words coming from Summer Glau (River on Firefly) at the most recent Wizard World in Dallas. However, I don't know if they were only going to look at the box office, or if they were going to include DVD sales.

As for Whedon, if anyone is atleast mildly interested in comics (the X-Men to be more specific), you should definitely pick up the two Astonishing X-Men trades that are out, it's currently a suspended series, as Whedon is taking a short break, but it will pick back up with him writing again here in a couple months I believe (hope). It's really been the only X-Men I have enjoyed reading in a long time because, as has been said, Whedon is just awesome. Plus the art in it is top notch (by John Cassaday).

Vol. 1
Vol. 2

I got the series on a boxing day sale for $24 CDN and loved it. Can't wait to see the movie... I figure I will buy it after how much I liked the series.

I'm trying to talk my local shop into getting him to come for Free Comic Book Day this year. I think he's going to try, which would be badass. There's already quite a list that have confirmed, as well as several that have all but confirmed.
