The switch can act as a second life for your headphone –if one of the two signal pathways or solder contacts fail between it and the driver– one flick away. Other than that it crowds your cups like a rat's nest with wire, that's why the HP2 is considered “purer” sounding... the HP1 could be considered better “damped”.
 
I'm not sure they're better matched/graded:

Drivers:
 
*There are four variations in the appearance of the HP-1000 drivers, model DH-40 made by Primo of Japan (now called Primo Mic Singapore), and exclusively for the HP-1000 and according to Joe's desired high specs. My researches led to the conclusion that they all sounded exactly the same. First, there is the white version, and the black podium version. By "podium" I mean that region colored in royal blue [for a lack of better terminology and since I'm the only one interested in that stuff, I invent and use my own vocabulary, lol; feel free to submit a better word]:

It's also called the "rippled area on the back of the drivers" but I find it too long to employ in my vocabulary.
 
The white and the black version divides further into two, with [+ traced out version] or without lettering:

Did you know that Primo (プリモ) DH-40 drivers were made at early 80's an were used at headphones such as Primo CD-1 CD-2 and a Coral CD-77 ? Just found it yesterday at some jap forums!

The new TTVJAudio Deluxe flat pads are improved through a new process. Fits all Grado headphones, and improves the sound. Hear more refined highs and tighter bass. A very nice upgrade over the older model. Not recommended for the GS or PS series headphones.
 
I wonder if they are similar to the new flat pads that Joe offered with the upgraded HP2. When I (after 22 month) got my HP2 back from Joe in the Summer of 2014, I bought an extra pair of his flat pads, thinking I could probably never replace them in the future.
 
On an unrelated item, my upgraded HP2 came back with a single cable, not the double cable configuration that other upgradees received, making me wonder if Joe was running out of cable by then.

My own modded HD414's are cheaper, more comfortable and better sounding: volume-regular, demasking (+resolution+), and twice the bass...
