The av-40 are 140$ near my home   the audioengine are nicer but smaller and less power... and 200$

A amp Dayton is 100$ + bookshelf good one start at 100$ + pair..

I think the av 40 win

If you can find an used pair of Polk, B&W, Tannoy/any quality brand bookshelf speaker from the 80's or 90's in good condition, I would recommend purchasing them + the Dayton amp instead of any of these new "Monitor" speakers at 100-300$ price range.

As an owner of the AV40's, I have to say: Get the JBL's, no matter if the AV40's were 80% off and you've already stolen your grandma's money. The Amazon page for the JBL's shows an excellent set of measurements. The AV40's don't sound as good as that.
