...until I read the hype here at Head-Fi about the AKG K701's.

Given the fact that my best headphones right now are the Sennheiser HD600's (and HD595's), and the fact that I have nothing better than a Grado RA-1 for an amp right now, I've definitely decided to order an Emmeline SR-71.

As for the headphones, I'm torn between an AKG K701 and a Beyerdynamic DT880. For my musical tastes, which would be the better choice? (I listen to most types of music: Classical, jazz, rock, R&B, dance, you name 'em.)

And don't get me going Grado, either; I've tried their highest-end cans, and they're just not my cup of tea.

Any questions or suggestions?

Hey Eagle Driver, good to see you back. There will be disagreement on which is the better headphone, but I prefer the K701 to the DT880, due to the more dynamic bass response and smoother high end.

I prefer the 701 to the 880, the sound just seems more balanced. (at least on a low/mid fi rig like mine)

So far, it's 2 votes for the K701, zero (so far) for the DT880.

And nope; I haven't really gone away from the Head-Fi forums. I've continued to lurk around in these forums since my last 'upgrade'.

So far I have heard many people who prefer 701 over their favoriate headphones (I believe my 701 is one step above my 580), and many who think 701 is on par with their fav, but very few have claimed that 701 is actually worse. The bottom line is that you just can't go wrong with getting the 701.

My advice is to pick up both, and keep the one that you like better, or you can just keep both like a true Head-fier.

Which reminds me, I have the urge to pick up a pair of DT880 just to compare to my K701s.

I prefer the K701 to my DT880 with Cardas recable. For classical and jazz, the K701 would be my pick over many other headphones. I can't think of many cases where I would pick the DT880/Cardas over the K701, but I still like the DT880 very much.

I've ordered the amp already, and I'm expecting it on Thursday. Unfortunately, I will be at work on Thursday evening, so I will likely pick it up Friday afternoon. And because I've spent some $$ on the amp, I will likely wait until after the Chicago Head-Fi meet to order the 'phones.
