Me too i use dbpoweramp, but you need to download and install the codecs though.

I know this is an old thread but I was hoping for some help.

Is there a way to download Apple lossless files from the iTunes Store? I know I can convert the songs but I'm not sure if that's a true lossless file or a compressed file that Apple just made bigger.

No, the iTunes Store only lets you download lossy AAC files, at least last time I checked.
 
I only buy from iTunes when it's exclusive content like bonus tracks or a different master.
