Is this true?

Yeh, it's "true". It's just standard business price discrimination.. look at microsoft windows if you want a prime example..

1.) drivers same =/= not same headphones. Housings, damping materials and other stuffs make differences. In personal experience, even after such mods HD555 is not really exactly same as HD595.

2.) Not only Sennheiser, but pretty much all of other companies do same....

Grado: SR60 to RS1 same drivers only slightly different damping and treatments.
Beyer: DT770/880/990 using all same drivers, but different housing and materials.
Sennheiser : HD580/HD600 case (only grill and cable are different.)

Drivers are just small part of headphones. Same drivers do not guarantee same sound (HD497, I heard, use same/similar drivers from HD650. But do they sound same? No. I heard them and they are completely different headphones.)

This housing and materials do play major role on overall headphones sound (like room treatments make a big difference on HT setup.)

P.S : But I think, for Sony Qualia 010 case, in which only differences with SA5000 are pads and cable, sometimes such practices are indeed ripoff.

Actually, there's no difference in damping between HD555 and HD595. Only difference is some extra trim, a leather headband, the stamp on the grills and the headphone stand that gets packaged with 595s (worth £20 or so on it's own). I haven't compared mine to 595s so I won't say they sound exactly the same however.. but I imagine they sound very similar

edit: oh and the colour of the plastic as well, which IMO is uglier than the HD555 grey

Whether it makes them sound better or not or even the same is up to the listener, they're not really exactly same, different housing. There’s all kinds of good mods for sennheiser headphones around here and people support them because they make good products, I love my hd650s

BTW click here for a HD580/600/650 MOD

The guy doing the video is a horrible narrator. He uses the wrong component terminology, lot's of "umms" and fumbles over his words often. He could have shot the video a couple of times until he got it right.
It was painful to watch, no matter what he was showing us.

Same applies, you can build the HD650 from the HD580

You can't. Drivers are different in the first place. Same membrane, but processes and treatments done on them are different.

You can also find the PX100 driver in other low-end Sennheisers.

Wherever you read that, the information is wrong. The Qualia drivers were never used elsewhere in Sonys range. Its the same with the myth that the CD3000 uses R10 drivers. Not true.

iGrado SR60 and SR80 use the same drivers

I think the K518 has the same drivers as the K416

Reading Symphones Magnum threads indicates it is very far form "Wrong."

And if you think very small companies like Grado can make individual different drivers for such board range of products, it would be time to check your reality sensor.
