The Internet Archive seems to be the perfect place for finding digital versions of older, more obscure music. However, a lot of it is only offered sample-only. Is there any way for to access these files? To me, it seems useless to have hundreds of thousands of songs when nobody can access them.

47 years until I hear some Edison cylinder music...

There may be some exotic exceptions to the above rule. But in the absence of any explicit, well-documented and well-researched info to the contrary, it's better to assume that the recordings are still protected.

I'm not sure which recordings will enter the public domain in 2067 btw. So I don't know if the Edison recordings will be available then.
