i think im going to buy a pair of the ATH's, but i wanted to know if there is a difference between build quality, sound quality, etc... between these models ? (are the ATH-M50s a different model?)

Sonically there is no difference.  They use the same drivers, same resonator design, and same cable engineering.  The ATH-M50s has the straight cable which is nice because the coiled cable always becomes tangled and attached to other objects.  The s is for straight cable.
