Well, I am in the market for new headphones because I have not yet found what I am looking for. So far I have owned and sold: HD-555, ER6i, Super-fi 5 pro and they all lacked what I needed. I hate IEMs and do not want them. This is what I am looking for out of my headphones:

-Good for a variety of music(reggae, rap, jam bands)
-My favorite artists incude Bob Marley, MF Doom, Nas, Grateful Dead, Phish, Dave Mathews, Jurassic 5.
-Good bass
-Very little sound leaking
-comfortable
-excellent unamped sound quality
-ability to be played through iPod

Also, I minus well tell you what bothered me with my other phones:

Superfi 5 and er6i: Couldn't get used to IEM's
HD-555: Way to passive and mellow sounding

So, is the Dt770 2005 for me or is there a better option?

The dt770's may fit your needs. The dt770's need to have amp to make them sound their best, so in that regard they may not work for you. It's not a matter of volume, but of sound quality.

So basically there is no headphone for me then. Great

Is the sound quality noticably worse without an amp on the 32 ohms model?

I don't see why the 32 ohm version wouldn't be fine without an amp.

Me neither...there is a 32 Ohm version I'm guessing. My 55 Ohm K240S do fine without an amp although we all know the story(better w/ an amp).

I know that the impedance rating doesn't tell the whole story but they sound like a winner to me...I've wanted to buy a pair just out of curiosity.

Good luck in your quest benton.

Well they seem the best for me because I don't see anything else that would work for me so I think I will go with them. I have enough money to buy a pocket amp as well so if it is necessary I guess I will have to do that.

Have you considered K81DJ? They are supraural, so if you have to wear glasses, they might be too tight and squeezing, but sound is great and so is bass. Also when you remove the foams, highs and mids also become more alive, way less passive.

They look nice, but better than the DT-770 2005?

I suppose the K81DJ would work, although you would lose a lot of comfort there. The 32 ohm version of DT770's fit your requirements, but you should ask Skylab how well they perform unamped before deciding. The A900's are supposedly great unamped and rival the DT770's.

Both have a similar sound signature with plenty of bass, but the 770 is a bit brighter and more detailed IMO. The 770 is also much more comfortable.

If you're going for strictly home use, I'd say the 770s, but for portable go with the DJs.

The 2005 DT770 *32 Ohm* version would be great, unless you need a highly portable can. Then I recommend the Sennheiser HD25-1. They do not sound like the other Senn's you tried - I think you'd like them.

But I like the DT770 better. They are the most comfortable headphone around too, IMO.
