Is the D5000 worth the extra money over the D2000?

I actually have experience with both as when I was in Japan I picked up the 2000 while my friend went with the 5000.

While the price discrepancy is hard to justify, the 5000s are superior in every way. The soundstage is absolutely incredible on the 5000s and they fix the one major problem of the 2000 - lack of bass.

If you can afford it, go with the 5000.

lack of bass??? I was just at Ishimaru Denki in Tokyo and the 2000 had way more bass than the 5000. If I had to quantify it, probably three or four times more.

So, I'm loving my D2000.

However, I'm already wondering how much better the D5000 could really be. I certainly don't want 3 or 4 times less bass... I'm assuming that the D5000s that uglijimus tried weren't properly ampedor something.

I remember Skylab saying the D5000 was better in every respect, like others here have said... but is it really twice as good?? What key features would I really want to pay that extra $210 for??

What it really comes down to is this:

If money is the issue, get the D2000. It's not that much worse. But... If you want to have the better one, and don't care that it costs more, get the D5000.

From what I remember (although I could be wrong) Ishimaru has a wall of headphones to choose from with the cables slinking off behind into some unknown source.

When I tried various cans there, I remember thinking that there was no way to make any valid comparison between cans given the unknown/questionable source (probably just some random reciever).

Best place I've found in Akihabara to audition headphones is Dynamic Audio. The first floor has an excellent assortment of high-end cans from which to choose, and a variety of quality amps to plug them into, plus they have great recliners to sit in while listening.

Last time I was there the Denons weren't available yet, so I'm not sure they actually carry them.

Oh yea... that graph reminds me of what Skylab had said last year... the treble on the D2000 is "slightly flawed". I'm sure I would like the D5000 more, but I'm definitely too happy with the D2000 now.

It'd be too fanatical for me to purchase the D5000 without having a huge excess of $$$, and I don't have it!!

Oh well, the D2000 is still friggin' awesome. Love at first sound!!!

Denon & me will be together 'til death do us part.

The D2000, a better AD700 (AD900/2000/K701/STAX???), & maybe MS-1 will prolly be my cans for life. Polygamy!! Heh.. awesome!!

Either way you're talking $400+ - might as well just get the D5000s and avoid the hassle with the cable.

And by the way... they are pretty "finicky" about the amp - they must have an amp with low impedence and high current output - like Grados require.

Would a Pico be a good match with both the D2000 & D5000. Thanks

Woah.. that's weird.

Doesn't dbr stand for decibel relative?
Then why is the D5000's entire graph shown ~3db's above the D2000's, except for a couple tiny dips near 20k.

Just because the entire graph is elevated doesn't mean that it has more bass, more mids, and more highs than then d2000's

If you click on the link that says "How we measure Headphones" on the left and read, you'll learn that all graphs are standardized at 90 dB SPL @ 1 KHz. This is the relative point by which all headphones are displayed on the graph.
