is little dot mk2 amp good enough for the akg k701
Nov 30, 2011 at 10:06 PM Post #2 of 19

It should not be too bad, at 62ohms and looking at the stats on Little Dot's page suggests about 150mW or so
at that impedance (roughly speaking)

Output voltage though at any impedance is not mentioned or published, this is also very important for
the K701 to perform it's best.

I don't think it will be a bad match up, but there is better - unfortunately out of your price range.

I wouldn't go cheaper than $124USD if you want to have a really transparent sound stage.

whats the cheapest amp that can drive a akg k701 to its fullest?

Malveaux's suggestion was excellent with the Audio GD range - $330USD
this is a combo DAC/Amp that really delivers - the amp section in particular
is more powerful than most standalone amplifiers. The DAC section will
be superior to most soundcards and a lot of $300 standalone DAC's.

It's a winner, and in my opinion the best value going around in the sub $500
range.

The best part is that when you order ~ you can tailor a few of the options
according to your needs. Please see their home page for details.

Heya,

I would worry a lot more about a good DAC and the best possible source music before worrying too much about an amplifier. The K701, even well amplified, is not going to very revealing (in a good way) from an average/poor source.

What's your DAC solution (or source, if DAC doesn't apply specifically)?

As for an amp, push 1 watt into it, it will be enough. Any amp that can do that will do great here. Lots of them in the ~$200 range.

Very best,

Audio GD generally prefer direct sales like Little Dot

Another good one would be the new Matrix M Stage with USB DAC - it's pretty new

The USB DAC module may ship separately and require basic installation skills like
eg, Violetric do the same thing.

M Stage doesn't output anywhere near the power of the NFB.

Both come from China.

Get the NFB if you want serious bang for your dollar. You email them what you want, they give you a quote, and you then use Paypal. Ships that week. Seriously, between the two, there's literally no reason to get the M Stage.

Very best,
