I ordered the Sony XBA-3 and the latest iPod touch. I want to know if using the earphones at high volumes for extended periods is bad for them. I know it is bad for your ears, but I need to know if it also bad for the earphones.

Your ears would be damaged before the earphones.  However dynamic drivers can be more easily damaged from high volumes that balanced armature drivers.  With either, if your ears can handle the volume you would never be damaging drivers.
