Is that quality really worth it?

If you have a surplus of disk space, I don't see why not. Unless you use a portable that doesn't support or have enough space to realistically use lossless codecs.

My ears can't tell the difference between ~224kbps VBR MP3 and FLAC, so your mileage may vary.

It's worth it just to keep a backup of your files. Plus I actually use it for home listening.

The best part about having a lossless backup is being able to convert them to any format you want with the push of a few buttons. Sure beats re-ripping all 200+ of my albums if I want higher quality.

I've compared FLAC with VBR V0 and with some songs I can tell a noticeable difference and some songs not much at all.

Overall I'd say that lossless songs sound a bit warmer. I'd say it's worth it as long as you have the disk space.

I can't tell difference between FLAC and 128kbps when I'm listening to White stripes - Jack White plays 4000$ guitars though 30$ amps

I dont use it so my answer would be no.
If i want a really good recording i use my hi-md and optical out
Rest of the time i just use between 192 and 256 and for on the go i'm happy with that

Lossless = Yes (imo that is)
FLAC = Depends. Depends on which software and hardware you use, since its not supported by all of them meaning that for some software and hardware you are better off with another codec.

Agreed 100%.

Except wait for a deal on the 500GB drive and you'll get it for $100. Then buy two, so you can backup your music.

That brings you up to 10 cents per cd. Still a no brainer IMO.

To me, if you are using lossy, then you are rationalizing (no, i dont mean rationing, although i guess thats true too lol).

And at some point you will wish you did differently
