pub,

well, i actually own the cambridge audio D300 (non-SE).
but i used to have the AMC CD8B. i sold the AMC long before i bought the cambridge, so i'm going on memory here . . .

the AMC is brighter and a bit thin. good detail, but it can be harsh on harsh recordings. it pretty much sounds like most CDP's out there.

ah, the cambridge sounds totally different. it has that english sound. very, very, very smooth with a recessed upper-midrange and great bass. no harshness--even on harsh cd's. but the detail doesn't really come through quite like on the AMC.

the D300's soundstage is much wider than the AMC CD8B.

i think classical and jazz are best suited for the AMC. rock for the cambridge.

as you can tell, i like the cambridge better.

hope this helps,
arnett

Can anybody tell me something about AMC CD8B?

I'm the guy who bought arnett's AMC CD8B awhile ago, and I couldn't be happier. To my ears this thing sounds much smoother than my other, older CD players (Sony and Technics). I'm sure there are better players out there, but I feel no need to find out. My next source upgrade will most likely be to SACD. The system consists of the AMC CD8B, Cardas Cross cables, and an Earmax Pro. Maybe the cables and tube amp soften the treble a bit, because I hear absolutely none of the harshness that arnett mentioned. I love the looks of it as well......very simple and understated. Thanks again, arnett.

well, actually, joelongwood, i said the the AMC is harsh on harsh recordings. just what you'd expect.

but the cambridge isn't harsh ever. in fact, i've been listening to almost nothing but 80's CDs in my cambridge since i got it. the treble is smoothed and the bass is increased. thus, thin, lifeless recordings sound great

glad you like your CD8B, joelongwood.
