Jebus, well, schoolmates who had their iPod minis fail on them recently got iPod minis back right from the Genius Bar. I wonder what exactly they keep back there.

I went and got the mail this afternoon and the iPod case I had ordered was in the box. Less than an hour latter, FedEx delivered my refurbished black 60 gb 5th gen iPod. Timing is everything!

All looks new. The headphones and dock to USB cord are in a new package. The iPod has the new wrapping on it and not a mark on anything.

This is my second 5th gen. The first was purchased about a year ago (?) Had problems with the screen. I returned it.

The new one went from the box and into its rubberized cocoon. The USB connection on my computer is USB1. It is slow - about 10 seconds per song. Doesn't sound like much until you start downloading thousands of songs. I have a firewire to dock connection, but the 5th gen does not support firewire (except to charge).

So far, So go.

I got mine yesterday. I plugged it in allowed it to update firmware and started loading files. Around 800 songs it locks up itunes. I tried again- another gb or two and it locks up itunes. I reformatted again and started over- same thing. I tried alac files, as it seems to be having problems with a couple of particular files- still lockup.

I think I should get my redwine today, so I will try it out as a benchmark, but I am pretty sure this ipod is messed up. Probably on its way back to apple.

I still dont regret it, however, it was $229, and its not my only ipod so I can wait another week for a replacement.

Edit- itunes wont transfer more than a few albums at a time to my other ipods either. I researched at apple support and many others are having the same problem. Looks like I have to add music the hard way until an actual fix is released- 7.0.1 didnt do it.

Update to post 34.

At the time I got the refurb iPod, iTunes 7 just came out. I downloaded a couple of thousand song to the iPod. It started acting crazy (song would not play and album art flashed on the screen then the player would cycleback to album list). Ohhh my God!

I erased, reformed, and downloaded again. Same issue. Went to bed.

Next day, 7.0.1 update. Everything seems to work!

I just got a USB 2.0 PCI card for my music computer (older G-4 Mac) for, like, $27. It took about 2 minutes to install and works like a charm. I'm just getting my 5G refurb loaded, but it seems to be fine. I also have refurb'd Shuffle and 4gig Nano, which are also fine.

Update

When itunes 7.0.1 failed to work for me I reverted to the previous version of itunes 7. Still not working today, so I figured I would try 7.0.1 again. Installing the new version removed the multi plugin used for itunes passthrough. I am now using my clean install of itunes 7.0.1 and transfer appears to working without a hitch. Multiplugin may have been causing the issue. This may be hasty as I am only at 2000 of 4500 songs, but previously itunes locked up around 800 songs, so this is quite promising.

I think I might just start using foobar instead of the passthrough.
