Is any mp3 player more user-friendly than the Ipod?

if your mom is able to power on the computer, logon, open the software that is required to download/transfer the songs to the player, rip the cd when necessary, i think any player should be easy to use when she has conquered the computer part.

With an iPod you don't have to do any of this.

Almost. You have to plug it in though. All the rest is your choice by presets & if you have your comp. on standby you don't even have to start it up. This is if you use it with itunes of course.

installation of itunes, ripping cd, downloading music, etc, takes effort too. this would make any mp3 player easy to use in comparison.

I thought you had to use it with iTunes? Is it possible to use iPod without?

To answer the title of this thread...how can you ask that? The beauty of the iPod is that its interface is so much more refined than anything else out there. Many have tried to copy it but none have even closely succeeded. You can argue with the sound quality (not enough bass)...but really there's no other way to scroll through 1000s of songs than with a touch wheel or hold it with one hand and have complete control over it with just your thumb. Man, my mom can do it and THAT'S CRAZY!

Funny, my player has a scroll wheel that does the exact same thing, except it was released half a year before the 4G iPod.

Contrary to popular belief, just because it's advertized the most, doesn't mean it's the only player with that feature. Scroll wheels are much easier than running my finger around a circle over and over for me, makes my thumb tired after a while.

So? A scroll wheel was the control on the 1st gen iPods produced three years ago. It's also been the only control on the iPod minis since their inception.

Good overviews and comparison, but it's interesting you didn't cover iTunes. That's at least half of the iPod ease-of-use story. And until other DAPs can replicate the tight and beautifully synergistic relationship between iPod and iTunes (and the iTunes Music Store), they will never be as "easy-to-use" as the iPod for most of the general public.

Wait, watch this..

a) Copy music to folder, or rip to folder with RMM.

b) right click artist, album, or song to send, and hit 'send to rio karma'

With the iRiver models,

a) open my computer

b) drag music into iRiver player

You must need to be a brain surgeon to do this, right?

My dad's in his late 50s and uses my Karma on occasion. He also uses EAC to rip stuff, all by himself. Old people may not be that well acquainted with technology, but if you introduce them to it properly, you'd be surprised how much of it they can get.
