Some headphones have huge impedence making them hard to drive. For them, a portable amp will provide enough power to improve performance. For headphones with lesser impedence, the loudness issue doesn't apply. What you're really looking for is better amplification than what you get off of an iPod or other portable device. With an LOD and a decent amp, you can get better sound, but you need that better amp - not just a tin box that turns the volume up.
