Town of Cut and Shoot..

According to one local legend, Cut and Shoot was named after a 1912 community confrontation that almost led to violence. According to differing versions of the story, the dispute was either over:

The design of a new steeple for the town's only church,
The issue of who should be allowed to preach there,or
The conflicting land claims among church members.
Whatever the circumstances were, a small boy at the scene reportedly declared "I'm going to cut around the corner and shoot through the bushes in a minute!" This statement apparently stayed in the residents' minds and was eventually adopted as the town's name.

Another local legend says that Cut and Shoot's name is derived from racist terminology dating back to the town's origins. The town of Cut and Shoot bears a black mark for its racist history, including the existence of a hanging tree that was used on African Americans prior to the civil rights movement.

French Lick, IN.

You know how Car & Driver has their "10 Best" issues? I don't subscribe any more, but they used to put in photos of the 10 best road signs that readers had sent in during the previous year.

One year, the comment was that as soon as someone from southern Indiana found the sign that was 69 miles from French Lick and sent it in, that would be the end of the contest, because it would probably be impossible to find a better one, ever.

Would I lie to you? Cut and Shoot is about 20 miles due north of Bush Intercontinental Airport.

And yes, French Lick is where Larry Bird grew up. Home of a large resort hotel, that's what made it famous first.
